Dave Holland New Sextet

Dave Holland New Sextet featuring Mulgrew Miller (piano) Antonio Hart (sax) Robin Eubanks (trombone) Eric Harland (drums) Alex Sipiagin (trumpet);

They'll be at Birdland in January..... DAMN, that's a good group.

That does sound good. Has he disbanded the quintet or is this an additional project?

Nice band! Mulgrew deserves a higher profile.

Sounds more "straight-ahead" than the current Quintet... Robin?

DAVE HOLLAND FESTIVAL: BIG BAND, QUINTET, NEW SEXTET, "STANDARDS" DUO
Wednesday, January 18 through Sunday, January 22 - show times 9&11pm
Music Charge: $40

Since getting his start with the Miles Davis band in the late 1960’s, bassist Dave Holland has hardly looked back on his way to becoming the most sought after bassist in jazz and a veritable living legend. His big band CD “Overtime” marked the debut of Holland’s own Dare2 record label. While the larger ensemble shows off Holland’s substantial composing and arranging chops, at its core are the members of his critically acclaimed quintet who have been hailed by Downbeat Magazine as, “one of the tightest, most progressive and risk-taking working jazz ensembles on the planet today.” During this special engagement Holland debuts two new projects, the New Sextet and “Standards” Duo. 1/18: Dave Holland Big Band; 1/19: Dave Holland Quintet; 1/20-21: Dave Holland New Sextet featuring Mulgrew Miller (piano) Antonio Hart (sax) Robin Eubanks (trombone) Eric Harland (drums) Alex Sipiagin (trumpet); 1/22: Dave Holland “Standards” Duo with Steve Nelson (vibes).

Certainly seems a lot more inside, but what a great grouping.

his bands are something - tightest - yes - but they are not risk taking by any stretch

that said, I'd like to see and hear any of the three bands - once saw the quintet (maybe in 1998) and they were fantastic

for me, they never lived up to what they are live on any of the ECM recordings I've heard - probably mostly because for some reason they never captured Kilson's awesome power on record

There are different kinds of risks. You can take a risk by jumping off a cliff, or you can take a risk by walking a tightrope. Both are risks with different rewards.

The compositions that this group plays are, to me, risks. The music is incredibly complex, the time signatures are very complicated, and soloing over the chord changes and the time signatures would constitute a risk for me....

Are there still risk-takers in jazz?

Good News!

I heard Eric Harland (drum) this summer. He is a very good drummer. He is imaginative with a lot of ideas. Dave made a good choice. The rest of the band is also very good.

Steve, with all due respect, perhaps you need to hear them again before pontificating?

Also . . .

I certainly agree with Steve when he says that the recordings don't capture the excitement of a live Holland gig. The recordings have always left me slightly disappointed - they're too clean, somehow.

I can't wait to hear this new sextet. Has Holland ever had a pianist in his own bands? Not that I can recall. And Miller is *the* underrecorded mainstream pianist these days.

The "standards" duo with Nelson also sounds great. I hope one or both or all hit the European circuit in 2006.

I'm with Steve - Kilson drove that band (for me) and the studio discs never captured him [well].

Eric Harland is a monster - if you want to check some great straight ahead - Kenny Garrett's (ah shit, what is it called?) Simply Said (I think) with Eric Harland on just the last track (which is 10 minutes) - The drummer Chris Dave plays the rest and you are thinkin' "Yeah he's really good" then that last track starts up and I was like "WOW! The drummer just stepped it up!" - only to find out later that that was Harland!

Imp ressive stuff

I can't remember a Holland-led band that had a piano in it - anyone?
