Friday 12/30 - NYC Chinatown/Open Loose hang?
I had dinner with Gokhan & Hande last night, and mentioned that it would be nice to get a critical mass together while they're in NY so they can have a stellar Chinese meal. I'll be away for about a week, but I see that Mark Helias' Open Loose, with Ellery Eskelin in the rotating tenor spot, is at Cornelia Street at 9 PM on 12/30. So, are any folks game for either or both?
Ellery, you should consider joining us for dinner.
9:00PM MARK HELIAS; OPEN LOOSE
Mark Helias, bass; Tom Rainey, drums; Ellery Eskelin, sax
"The trio's name "Open Loose" refers not only to its musical style, but to Mark Helias' compositions which are written with plenty of space in them, and are designed to be interpreted openly and loosely. They allow for seamless transitions between composed passages and improvisation, never easy to achieve.
This threesome fully exploits the creative possibilities of the compositions, never opting for a clichéd theme-solos-theme format. The group has the knack of starting with a rather loose - sometimes even ramshackle - piece and slowly allowing it to evolve until it emerges as a tight theme.
Open Loose has been touring for six years and has released three CDs."

I will make a real effort ot get to the show
as I am not braving NYC for Ellery's show this thursday (tomorrow)
plus 9:00 rather than 10:00 is much preferable for me
will be nice to see the band - maybe especially Rainey - as I havn't seen him play since somehwere around 1997 or 98

Mary, if you make it out that night I will give you something so special like you wouldn't believe (and special for you in a way it wouldn't be for anybody else here).

So set another place for someone else who will be there in spirit.
I can still taste that fine Chinese food we had.

Gordon's in town that week, but we're going over to see Otomo Yoshihide at Stone that night....

that's the 28th, I thought (that Gordon's going). but it's Otomo all week for me also (not that I'd consider doing this anyway, with all due respect to all concerned).

Pete
Maybe you should just plan a hang out here. We have lots of excellent Chinese places.

I'll be at the Otomo show in spirit, but if I could make it in spirit in time for the dinner then I will be there in spirit. But in spirit I probably would have to leave early. Would it take long to get in spirit from the restaurant to the Otomo show in spirit?

it's on the other side of town, but spirits don't have to worry about that kind of thing.

The Stone wouldn't preclude dinner. We could do it at 6, or even 5:30, since it should be a short work day.

Pete, I always think of you when I'm enjoying Chinese food. My enjoyment is tempered by what I suspect your reaction to tasting the food would be. A look of irritation, bordering on disgust. Scoffing at the pretense of the meal and the surroundings, throwing down your napkin and shoving the table violently away from your chair as you begin to rant: "What is this? You call this Chinese food? This isn't Chinese food. This is horsesh**! Call me back when you want to eat real Chinese food. No, not 'almond chicken.' Real Chinese food. What is this crap? Where's the PORK??? For the love of f**king god. Don't waste my time with this garbage, bitch."

That's right. Now that the transit strike has ended, I'm a definite for the 28th. I'll be driving home on the 30th and will be otherwise occupied so if anybody wants to join Brian, Jon and me on the 28th, that would be great.

Add to that the fact that Pete is, in fact, a barking bull dog with glasses, and it's quite a combination.

Gordon--
I think he's already left town for a week or so, and he didn't expect to have access to the board. I definitely want to let him answer that.

Checking in from San Diego. I enjoyed Saffron. I had the tandoor smoked baby rack of lamb with blackberry ginger glaze.
So, Gokhan, is this plan good for you?
