What Jazz Did you Give or Get for the Holidays?
Man, I can't believe I'm the first one to start a thread like this!
My girls got me the 3cd complete Bill Evans at the VV. It is so, so beautiful!
They also got me a book on Billie Holiday & one on Miles Davis.
I gave my brother in-law an audio & visual theme gift. He listens to Jonathan Schwarzt's show here in NYC, so I gave him Jonathan Schwarzt's autobiography which has a cover with blue squares just like Tina Brooks' "True Blue" album, so I gave him a copy of that album (although he said "who's she"?--he knows a lot about opera, but not much about jazz, but he does love the vocalists) and I also gave him a copy of a Jo Stafford cd with my favorite Arthur Schwartz (Jonathan's father) song on it, "Haunted Heart".
Now, for all my sweeties here at work who work with me on this HUGE securities litigation I'm always dealing with--it was a Dennis Gonzalez Christmas for everyone!!!
I bought a ton (like 11, I think) copies of "Nile River" and when I ordered it, I asked Dennis to autograph them and I gave him the people's names. Well, that total sweetie autographed every one of them with a different and "personal" dedication. I wrapped each one individually and gave them to the folks I work with closely. Well, everyone was thrilled!!! I mean, really! Everyone hugged me and one cat wrote me that I was the sweetest! Well, we all knew that, didn't we?
Here's the drag, though. Since they know Dennis is a dear friend of mine, I think they thought that Dennis had given me the cds (or that the cds were from him). For example, my secretary, Annie, who I wrote about on Dennis' thread and she met him and all when Dennis was in NYC and came to my office and so on...well, when I gave hers to her, she said "Oh, I'm going to send him a Christmas card!". Later, when I asked what did she say in her card, she said "I thanked him for the cd!". I was like, "oh, I bought the cd!"
I got the feeling that a few other folks weren't hip that I had paid for them. And, other than getting one or, at most, a couple of free copies from people who are near to me, I BELIEVE in paying artists for their work! So, I tried to say things like "Yes, I bought a bunch from Dennis and then he was sweet enough to sign them all". I mean, I couldn't come out and say "Hey! I paid for these, I'm not cheap!!"
But, I think most folks understood.
Anyways...what did you guys get or give?

The only music I got this year was "Our New Orleans" from my son. It features many N.O. players with proceeds going to Habitat. I have already played it a half dozen times.
Particularly outstanding is Irma Thomas' rendition of Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues," how fitting. I also like Allan Toussaint's "Yes We Can" which is very reminiscent of the Staples and Eddi Bo's very different version of "Saints."
If you love New Orleans you need this cd.

Sounds like you have a variation of what is known as "The Big Salad" syndrome.
I gave none and got none...at least that I can remember. I got as jazz bio of Tommy Dorsey, though.

Good for you, St. Nick!
I got Feign as well, which I might like even better. But both, like pretty much everything Berne has released this millenium, are great.

George: Did you see what just happened?
Jerry: Well, that all depends. . .
George: Did you happen to notice that Julie handed the big salad to Elaine?
Jerry: Yeah, so?
George: Well, she didn't BUY the big salad. I bought the big salad.
Jerry: Is that a fact?
George: Yes it is. She just took credit for my salad. That's not right.
Jerry: No it isn't.
George: I mean I'm the one who bought it.
Jerry: Yes you did.
George: You think she should have said something?
Jerry: She could have.
George: Oh, I know.
Jerry: Imagine, her taking credit for your big salad.
George: You know you buy a big salad for somebody it would be nice if they knew it.
Jerry: Obviously.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Julie: Well, my question is, How could Elaine be under the impression that you bought the big salad, when I was the one who handed it to her?
George: Well, she probably just assumed.
Julie: Um, did she?
George: . . .uh, . . . wait a second. Are you suggesting that I went out of my way to tell Elaine that even though you handed her the big salad, that it came from me?
Julie: That's what I'm suggesting.
George: . . . WELL IT WAS A BIG SALAD. AND WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS, HOW DOES A PERSON WHO HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BIG SALAD CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR THAT SALAD AND ACCEPT THE THANK YOU UNDER FALSE PRETENSES - AH - AH?
Julie: George, all I did was hand someone a bag.
*****************************
Amusingly, all I did was Google "the big salad" and this came up instantly.
Joe Lovano - Rush Hour
Billy Harper - On Tour in the Far East V. I-III
Art Pepper - Mosaic Select
Paul Chambers - Mosaic Select
I'm thinking about doing a one year CD purchase fast to listen to what I have and save a grand. Easier said than done.
Went down to Logos in Santa Cruz and picked up a used vinyl copy of Braxton / Muhal Richard Abrams 1976 Duets album for $3, which Brian pans over at Allmusic.com.
Havent listened to it myself yet, though.
I also got Ralph Towners' Diary (ECM) on vinyl for $3 as well.
Mostly because I liked the cover.
In the non-Jazz dept, also got David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees, Ry Cooder s/t and Chicken Skin Music.
Now if I only could get my turntable to work properly.
We're two blocks from the Russian River and the River is ferocious, white water! Hope it gets a chance to recede before the next one hits. But dowtown Healdsburg gets it worse than us, the overflow from Foss Creek. Downriver always takes the big hit. In Monte Rio I was once evacuated by rowboat. Half that town is actually in the flood plain.
I didn't give any jazz this year, nor did I get any jazz this year. However, I did order Miles Davis' "Complete Cellar Door Sessions," and Bill Frisell's "East/West" from Amazon today. I'll be receiving them in the new year.
Yeah! It's so funny to hear "Watch What Happens" sung with pedestrian dialogue about selling jewelry! And of course the song "I Will Wait for You" is one of the most heartrending things ever. Beautiful movie. I always cry.
I've caught this movie on TV several times recently. It is simply one of my favorite things of all time.
I'm in a way glad that my family doesn't own property on the Russian River anymore. Even though I love going there in my childhood, it got to be too much for my mom and aunt to take care of. Our property was in Duncan's Mills.
The other night I aired a couple of EAS alerts for the Russian River area. Even though the city of license for the TV station that I work at is in San Jose, we do pass on the alerts for the entire Bay Area because we are on the majority of cable systems in the area.
Cookie: I saw it opening week, at the New Yorker Theater. Still remember the night vividly.
Surfer and Kedoane: the storm gates is wide open, they're lined up to hit us one after the other every few days now, and they're all of the warm, wet sub-tropical kind.
I gave the Simon Nabatov CD 'A Few Incidences' to my daughter's friend, a young jazz bassist.
Return from my daughter I got two books:
'Tonight At Noon' by Sue Mingus + a very nice small book of Volker Kriegel about a nosetrumpeter illustrated by himself ( ironics about a musicians career ).
Yes, I've sent a DVD I took at Bunker Bielefeld from(?) the von Schlippenbach trio to Paul Lovens.
I made out like a bandit. The gracious Gokhan stayed here last night and had burnable copies of some great stuff with him, including an outrageous 1996 Birmingham gig with EParker, Dunmall, Levin and both Rogers and Guy. Also, Roscoe Mitchell's excellent Turn with his quintet including Taborn, as well as a Mahanthappa/Iyer gig where Mitchell sits in, and the Otomo Out to Lunch (good mostly for the Dorner solos, at least in IMHO). And some nice classical stuff too.
And all it cost me were some Bruce's Fingers promos and a dinner (which took forever to come)! All house guests should be like Gokhan and his lovely friend.
