Junk thread - What is the first Jazz record you will play in 2006?

Swing out....or not.

Or...did you ever play the game of you being the first person to play a particular song as the new year begins?

I always choose ALL the music on New Year's Eve, and they pay me for it, too! I'm the caller, right?! This is my 23rd year doing the gig. At midnight we sing "Auld Lange Syne" and then do a balloon drop with prize tickets inside.

Then I do the first singing call of the new year, which is always "It's A Good Day" by Peggy Lee and her husband Dave Barbour, who played guitar in the bands of Benny Goodman, Boyd Raeburn and many others.

I don't have a clue as to which jazz recording might be my first to be played in 2006.

However, I must indicate my strong objection to the word "junk" being a part of this thread.

Why?

What is the first Jazz record you will play in 2006?

I have absolutely no idea. It depends on how I feel at the time. 2006 is still 14 hours away here, and I'll be celebrating New Year in a local pub with some friends, so I won't be listening to any jazz until I get home in any case. And I'll probably just go to bed at that point. Then I will be playing English folk music tomorrow lunchtime so I'll be in a rush to leave the house when I get up...

My guess is it'll be from somewhere between Jelly Roll Morton and Evan Parker.

Like Ron Thorne, I was also wondering why the word "junk" was necessary in the title. And the word "thread". I can tell it's a thread.

Some things are not necessary, but they are chosen.

Why do you feel the need to point out that thread is a word? I can tell it's a word.

Of course!

You asked, John.

If you don't wish to learn another POV, don't ask.

I still don't automatically connect "junk" with music, art, etc.

Well, if we don't want the word "junk" in there, the word "thread" is a little redundant, isn't it?

Whatever I play, I hope it's something new. Woudn't want to play something old first thing in the new year. Since today and tomorrow are working days for me, I'll likely not be up to welcome the year (and I do -- I won't miss 2005 for any longer than it takes the clock to turn midnight), so likely the first jazz won't get played til the evening of the 1st.

(I don't listen to music much while working, usually none, and only rarely listen to jazz in the truck, where I don't always listen, either, but when I do it's normally something ultrafamiliar so I don't have to think about it much, old rock and roll or r&b and like that.)

I'm usually pretty conscientious about the "first" music I play, whether it's first in a new apartment (I seem to recall Joe Henderson's So Near, So Far inaugurating a Jamaica Plain apartment), house (don't recall), or, more recently, iPod (Gentle Giant's Free Hand).

As for first jazz recording I'll play tomorrow, I may want to pick according to my mood or state of mind (if I need a gentle, familiar welcome to the new year because of tipping into the Glenmorangie too much, I could see Kind of Blue or Bill Evans Sunday at the VV getting the nod); or a recording that really blew my mind last year (a recent candidate would be the New York Hardbop Quartet's Rokermotion); or something from an artist whose show was very memorable in the preceding year (I guess McCoy Tyner would be a leading candidate for that one).

Either way, I'm more curious what my first jazz CD purchase will be in '06.

I will be playing, as the first music I hear in 2006, my 10" Jazztone record, J-SPEC#100, then another Jazztone, "Dixieland - Chicago Style", followed by all my Pee Wee Russell. Love that Dixieland! What better way to say "Hi" to the upcoming year?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Interesting. I hadn't given it any real thought.

The place I'm most likely to encounter jazz first in the New Year is in my car. Instead of choosing a CD to have in there, I think I'll keep the radio tuned to NPR. Don't they have jazz on NYE? Anyway, I'll be curious to hear what's on in the car as I'm packing up equipment after the job.

It's snowin', folks. Say a prayer for all of us who are "on the road" tonight. I'm going to leave early and I think I'll sleep over at a bandmate's crib.

When I get home tomorrow, I think the first thing I'll listen to is this Steve Kuhn with strings. I'm only familiar with Kuhn's work with Sheila Jordan and other singers. I haven't listened much to *his* music and I'm looking forward to hearing something very new to me. I think I'm going to lay out a pad on my studio floor, lie down flat, and let the music hit me.

Happy New Year!

I remember when I was a teen back in the 1960s there weres still live big band remotes on New Year's Eve on the radio from all over the USA and some stations with network affiliates would go from venue to venue, time zone to time zone broadcasting all kinds of name bands.

End of an era for sure.

I haven't thought much about it.

But then again, I have been busy with the EAS here at work. I just wish that the storms will go away.

I just got a turntable yesterday so I'll probably be listening to Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else 200 gram Classic Records LP. I own four records so it is easy to say!

Ron - Happy New Year to you too!

My 2005 was tough but despite the hardships I'm strangely satisfied about it all.

Best to you and your family.
