New Year's Wish - Choose one jazz musician...

If you could choose any dead jazz musician to come back to life in the prime of their career, which one would you choose?

CHOOSE ONE AND ONLY ONE!

All other entries will be deemed invalid and your wish WILL NOT be granted.

Charles Mingus, 1959.

(although Buddy Bolden would have great historical value, he would probably end up having been overrated.)

Anyone of those special spirits who went way too soon & had tons to contribute still.

Clifford Brown
Eric Dolphy
John Coltrane
Albert Ayler
Tom Cora
Thomas Chapin
Fred Hopkins

...seemingly endless list...can't pick one, wish they were all still around.

ps. you really gotta work on those thread titles, John...

I'm with Cem. It's impossible to list only one jazz great I'd love to have living and playing again at their peak.

For starters:

Jim Pepper
Alan Dawson
Tony Williams
Scott LaFaro
Charles Mingus
Eric Dolphy
Eddie Harris
Sarah Vaughn
Ella Fitzgerald
John Coltrane
Duke Ellington
Miles Davis
Bill Evans
Paul Chambers
Thelonious Monk

No. You can only hope that the musician you choose will start a band.

So...take your choice. Coltrane or Ellington. Which is more important to you to have back? Consider the ramifications and the possibilities.

Don't be greedy. Gotta be this or that.

Check the news on the next few days.

People are coming back already.

Not that it matters, but I think I misunderstood the intention for this thread.

I chose Eric Dolphy as someone who expired in his prime, and quite young. He is probably the foremost (in my mind) jazz artist whose greatest work most likely lay ahead.

Even if Dolphy had lived a few more years...1964-1968 would've/could've been remarkable, given where he was heading, and how vibrant the scene was during those years.

Yes, and for similar reasons I chose Kuryokhin, who I think was exploring an area unique to him and that hasn't been mined since his death at 42. Picking Pops or Duke or Dizzy in their prime (and I love all three) would have given us more of what we've already heard; whereas Kuryokhin or Dolphy or Brownie or some of the others who were cut down before their prime may well have produced music the like of which we've never heard.

How do you know, John? Maybe they're unborn Buddhists.

How can I "waste" a choice?

No one's coming back from the dead. Matters not who I choose.

There are also, believe or not, people who listen to jazz musicians who are still alive and playing, today.

I pick Mingus, precisely on the grounds that he would start a band and all the young jazz talent would want to be in it--I've always thought his demanding, energizing bandleading would have made an incredible difference for jazz in the 80's and 90's. So if you can bring him back, John, don't delay!

Yeah, time to hold John accountable for this. Just bring back one, John. We'll make it easy for you -- you get to pick which one.

All the individual choices will be granted to the believers. Have faith. They are on their way back.
