Governor Lynn Swann
Damn, man. The guy must have had a lot of concussions.
Swann to officially join Pa. governor’s race
By Angela Couloumbis
INQUIRER HARRISBURG BUREAU
Former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann is expected to make official his plans to run for governor tomorrow night, joining a field of three other Republicans vying for the state GOP nomination.
Swann will kick off his three-day announcement tour in downtown Pittsburgh at 6 p.m., where he is scheduled to address a crowd at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center, Pennsylvania's largest history museum. On Thursday, he will travel to Erie, Altoona and Scranton, and will complete his tour Friday by traveling to Philadelphia, Allentown and Lancaster.
Swann, 53, will be competing against three other Republicans seeking the party nomination in the May primary. Next month's endorsement vote by members of the state Republican party is expected to be close, with Swann vying for the endorsement against former Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton and Sen. Jeff Piccola (R., Dauphin).
The fourth candidate, former Lebanon County businessman Jim Panyard, has announced his intention to run, but is not seeking the party's endorsement

The guy's got 4 Super Bowl rings. Yeah, he could govern.
He won't get the Philly vote if Harold Carmichael could be talked into running.

I have no idea what Carmichael's personal political affiliation is, but Philly's a mostly Democrat city, so he might go for the Democratic nomination.
A Carmichael-Swann contest for governor would be pretty exciting, wouldn't it?

I think all that was put to rest with his performance on the field.

Swann is considered a "Tom" by many in the African-American community, and I don't think many blacks in Pennsylvania will vote for him once they find that many of his views don't mirror theirs.

I think it's racist to call a black Republican an "Uncle Tom." The idea that all people of one race should vote alike is repulsive.
FWIW, according to John Feinstein in his book, "Next Man Up," most NFL players are Republicans.

You know, you watch the NFL pregame and commentary and there you see a fantastic display of pan-racial masculine fraternity. All these rich former players, black and white, getting together and having a ball and back-slapping and making gentle fun of each other. It's a celebration of what is great about America because it doesn't matter what color you are, so long as you were a football great and you're huge and you have a big, fat broadcast contract. Now what am I saying? Am I saying that the answer to x hundred years of racial strife on this continent is to draft all males, no matter what their talent, into the NFL? No. That's an absurdity and might even be impracticable. What we should do is give everyone in America their own NFL pregame show to share with three buddies, provided no more than two of the buddies are of the same hue.
Lynn Swann runs on this program, he's gonna win.

Monte,
Unfortunately, Swann was only a sideline reporter. Now if we could've seen him rubbing bellies with ESPN's Triplets (Erin Andrews, Alex Flannigan, and Sam Ryan) that would be a platform to run on.

I'm kind of into Erin myself. I love the way she calls Kirk Herbstreet "Herbie". If I were Kirk's old lady I'd be worried.

Your "Hollywood is liberal" myth is just another fantasy that you have swallowed hook, line and sinker without looking into any of the facts.
But it is another lie that will you hold on until your deathbed because you hold the whole "liberal elite" GOP nonsense -- and your Barbra Striesand voodoo dolls -- so near and dear.

Hey rollie. If we traded off a name at a time, do you honestly believe my list wouldn't be at least three times as long as yours. I mean, everything else about me is.

Hahaha.
By the way, neither Republicans nor Democrats carry cards. Gary's always harping on this and despite himself, he is right. The US doesn't have major political parties that you can "join."

update: swann won support from some central penn republican caucus, which now narrows the field to only swann and scranton. swann is now a bona fide contender for the nomination.
the democratic governor is considered a strong incumbent although he signed a midnight $20,000 a yr raise for legislatures, which outraged voters and had to be repealed, and may make him vunerable.

I bet you don't believe half the things you say.
If a secret ballot poll let those attending the Academy Award to give the Preference, let's say Bush vs. Kerry. what do you think the results would look like?
I'd say 6% Bush, 94% Kerry.
