A better debate than Letterman vs. O'Reilly

Milton Friedman vs. Bob Kuttner.

One doesn't have to share Friedman's libertarianism to admire his brilliance and debating excellence.

How can he be exhibiting "debating excellence" when he's not debating? He's being interviewed.

He is still as sharp as I remember him. He's always blunt and to the point.

And I agree with bluenote. That was an interview, not a debate.

Plus, you can see that he isn't cold blooded, and sees a role for a humanitarian government that offers catastrophic health insurance, which is something we don't have now.

It is interesting that a progressive publication ran that piece, and treated him with all the dignity he deserves.

Too bad conservative publications aren't as open-minded to other ideas or as civil to the people they disagree with.

You'll be voting for Mitt provided he runs on a platform of health insurance reform, won't you Rolly?
Mitt has about as much chance of being president as that tub of goo in your avatar.

He's up to 10% at Tradesports for the nomination. You think that's much too high? His odds are the 4th highest.

Aside to Monte: I sold my Giuliani futures last week, taking a very minor loss.

I wouldn't bet on Giuliani or Romney for the long haul, though you might be able to make some short-term gains between now and the primaries.

Giuliani as president? "Moderate Republican" are extinct, except for a few leftover Rockefeller Republicans in NY.

A "pro-choice" Republican doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell on the national stage.

A "pro-gay-rights" Republican doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell.

Besides, the only thing he is given credit for is the decline in the crime in New York City, which was a function of changing demographics, the demise of the crack epidemic and -- to a lesser degree -- COMSTAT, none of which he can take responsibility for.

His multiple "perp walks" in Manhattan when he was US attorney was just show-boating, which is what he does best.

Well, he can take credit for not high-tailing it to the bunker -- as did Dick Cheney and George Bush -- on 9/11.

He is one of the few "tough talking" Republicans -- along with John McCain -- who actually have cojones.

i'll take an opposing view on friedman. i read one of his books where he raised the lamest of arguments against by using the american medical association as the example of why labor unions are bad. kindofa paul b argument....

i also think that his economic policies were put into action in the 80s under the reagan adm. friedman argued that business would swell, and make so much money that business new found wealth would raise enough money to compensate for the massive business and high income tax breaks. instead the deficit outran gross domestic product...despite massive cuts in benefits to the poor. talk about all hat no cattle....

I doubt it.

Bullet points from issues2000.org.

* Endorsed legalization of RU-486. (Mar 2002)
* Personally against abortion, but pro-choice as governor. (Mar 2002)
* For safe, legal abortion since relative's death from illegal. (Oct 1994)

and the kicker: He supports the following statement.
Sexual orientation should not preclude being a Scout:

There's a fascinating new interview with Milton Friedman. FYI, he said in the interview, "We should not have gone into Iraq."
