I'll probably be there this year for 4 days, but I won't be seeing any of those.

It's the same for me.

First, I would like to see Patricia Barber, but i don't know if she come in a trio, a quartet or a quintet band. Second, i don't like The Spectrum. I would like to see Zorn, but it's the same reason, i don't like Théâtre Maisonneuve and the cost of the tickets are expensive.

If you lived in NYC, you'd appreciate both the Spectrum & Maisonneuve. The acoustics are good at both. What don't you like?

At the Spectrum, each time i go there, i never found the sound ok. Waiting in line at the door one, two or three hours, it's not my cup of tea.

I can give you an exemple: You wait in line. You are 100 persons in line. You are in the beginning of the line. The door open, and everybody start to run like fools. You look behind you and finds yourself the last one. You arrive in the place, bad seats is your alternative (there are not reserved seat at the Spectrum).

At the Maisonneuve, if you are more than 5 feet 8", you have your knees in your face at the balcon. Usually, the tickets are also expensives.

Even if i don't like this place, i know a lot of people who enjoy this two places. What about N.Y?

Some of the clubs are great, but almost all of the concert halls have dreadful acoustics for jazz. In fact the only large hall I know of in the area with great acoustics is in Newark. Well, Radio City Music Hall has excellent acoustics, but they don't often get jazz artists. I did see Tony Bennett, Ray Charles & the Gypsy Kings there, though.

Let's try to hook up for a drink during the festival.

And I hope Jazzzoline makes it this year.

While it's not my favorite venue in Montreal, I like The Spectrum. Perhaps I'm easily amused, but I seem always to find a terrific seat no matter how many people show up. It helps that the sightlines are good from less than excellent seats...

Metropolis though.... That's a venue I find difficult.

I'm puzzled though. Equipe Spectra keeps announcing - and delaying - plans to close and remodel The Spectrum. As recently as July, I was told (by who work for Equipe Spectra) that The Spectrum would be used for a final show on New Years Eve - and then would be closed for as much as 2 years for renovations, as well as expansion of Equipe Spectra venues to be constructed on that old rather run down block East of The Spectrum. Eventual plans call for the whole block to be turned into cinemas and a performing arts park, as well as a new home for Colour Jazz FM to the the East of The Spectrum as well as a new underground connection to Complexe De Jardins. But as you can see from the bookings they've announced, plans have been delayed yet again. Which is good news from my point of view, just because I'm not looking forward to whatever less convenient venue they eventually have to move all those shows to for FIJM.

Plans have also been drawn up to construct a home for the MSO, on land just to the West of the present Place Des Arts. That land is near the spot the FIJM always uses for the Tropiques Stage (Scene Bleu Dry). I do believe this will eventually happen because the MSO audience is, I'm told, so frustrated by years of poor sound. This will take years though, ...the money hasn't been found yet.

Chaz, I'm looking forward to hooking up with you again. I'm meeting David M at Burlington airport on 6/30 and we're driving up, stopping at the Pinnacle cidery on the way.

I've seen him so many times, it'll have to be a unique group to get me there.

Question: I was talking in line the other day with a guy about absurd government moves and he told me we (meaning Yanks) now need a passport to go to Canada. I can sometimes tune out because I can only deal with so much moronity at a time but did I miss something the Bushist nightmare has created for us?

Jazz minds want to know....

I'll look forward to seeing you, (and David) in July Pete. Glad you'll be able to make it.

A photo ID will get you across the border, Gary.
VT was the last state in the nation to offer driver's licenses without photos. Ahhh, those were the days.

A passport will eventually be required. Here are the timetables.

* December 31, 2006 – Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

* December 31, 2007 – Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel.

Well, fuckin' hell. More Homeland Moronity. I'll get one in time for the final deadline easily enough. I wasn't looking forward to jumping through hoops between now and festival season. I have enough to do with work without adding work to get a pass at the border in time for (I hope) V-ville. My passport expired in 1990.

It's possible I might be able to make some short trips this year, though not certain. V-ville is a definite hope because close. So is Montreal because closer, but I'll wait to see what they're offering besides the headliners, none of whom interest me so far but they rarely do.

I can only dream there was a club like Spectrum in my climes. I've always enjoyed shows there. Salle du Jesu is the best room, though, and often has the more interesting shows as well.

I totally agree with you. The place Gésù - Centre de créativité is my favorite place to see the shows. The other place i like a lot is Le Monument National on St-Laurence Street.

Whoops. Forgive my spelling Gesu incorrectly.

There's another small theater just east of Place des Arts on the south side of St. Catherine that's also a very nice room. I heard Cecil Taylor solo there once, and it was one of the best concerts, both musically and roomwise, that I've ever heard. I can't remember the name of the theater at the moment.

Theatre Nouveau Monde.

They don't use that venue every year - I don't think Equipe Spectra owns it.

Yes, they haven't used it for a while, but it's the room Sisco's thinking of, Pete.

Hi Jazzoline. Long time no see...
The Club Soda near Monument National wasn't yet built when Cecil played FIJM last.

Chaz is right about the theater I was remembering. It's a very nice room but I've only heard the one show there. I try to skip places like Metropolis, which is on the other side of the St Catherine and a bit farther east.
