Announces 2003 Discretionary Award Honorees

The Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) Jazz Awards 2003, the seventh annual presentation of honors to jazz musicians and their supporters by the organization representing more than 400 writers, broadcasters, photographers and new media professionals worldwide will be held at B.B. Kingıs Blues Club and Grill in New Yorkıs Times Square area on Wednesday, June 25 from 4 to 7 PM. Doors open at 3:45 PM. This yearıs major sponsor is Pfizer Inc.
Artists set to appear at BB Kingıs are: Pianist Jamie Cullum, in his U.S. debut sponsored by Verve Records, Judi Silvano & James Williams performing "A Tribute to Mal Waldron," the New Jazz Composers Octet, the David Hazeltine Quartet and the Wallace Roney Quintet.

For the first time, the JJA is honoring jazz activists internationally for their humanitarian contributions to the art form. These Discretionary Awards honorees decided by the JJA board, will be presented in Jerusalem, Chicago, Washington D.C. and Monterey, California as well as New York City on June 25. The 2003 honorees include:
o Arnie Lawrence, Jerusalem-based saxophonist and International Artistic Director of "God Bless The Child," working for the protection of all children in regions of conflict worldwide, and Anna Immanuel, Associate Director of GBTC.
o Barry Harris, pianist, educator and Director of the New York City Jazz Theatre Workshop.
o Dorthaan Kirk, Community Relations and Coordinator of Special Events, WBGO-FM, Newark, NJ.
o Dr. Robert Litwak, cardiologist, Mt. Sinai Hospital, NYC.
o Dr. Daniel Kane, chairman of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center
o Representative John Conyers (D-Michigan), for recognition of his work to support jazz in the U.S. Congress.
o Davey Yarborough, Director of the jazz program at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Washington D.C.
o Dr. Lewis Marshall, "jazz doctor," Washington, D.C.

In Washington, D.C., JJA Discretionary Awards "For Services To and Beyond Jazz" will be presented to Dr. Lewis Marshall ("the jazz doctor") and Davey Yarborough (Duke Ellington School of the Arts) at Blues Alley on June 28 during the scheduled performance of the Larry Willis band. In Chicago, JJA Discretionary Awards will be presented to Dr. David Hinkamp (Health in the Arts, Occupational Health Service Institute, University of Illinois at Chicago) and Jim deJong (About The Music Consultancy/Jazz Institute of Chicago board member) at Hot House, the multi-cultural performance space, from 5:30-7:30 PM. In Carmel, CA, JJA Discretionary Awards will be presented to Dr. David Morwood (volunteer surgeon for Rotary International-sponsored Rotoplasty medical missions to South America) and Bruce Forman (guitarist and founder of Jazz Masters Workshops and The Music Performance Developmental Workshops, Seaside, CA), at Jazz and Blues Company, the performance venue at radio station KRML-AM, Saturday June 28 -- music by Forman's student guitar ensemble, and Morwood's Monterey Jazz All-Stars.
