Billy Hart on The Death of Lee Morgan
I somehow have the feeling no-one else here reads The Bad Plus's blog, but you're missing out, it's consistently excellent. Anyway, a recording by Ethan Iverson of Billy Hart's version of the story: http://thebadplus.typepad.com/dothem...ath_of_le.html

Well, mke, to be totally honest, one has to be hip to such sites before one can take advantage of them.
Thanks for the link.

It's WAY too long to copy here, but I stayed up late last night reading the 3- part interview (conducted by his pianist, Ethan Iverson) on Billy Hart's website (there are also some new music samples).
At first I thought it would be the usual "in 1962 I did this and that" thing, but it's not that at all. Lots of crunchy anecdotes and insights into the evolution of drumming and of jazz in general and of the importance of Carribbean musicians with English first names. Highly recommended

Thanks for the link, mwanji. I'm enjoying reading this 3-part interview, but damn it's difficult to read with black text on a brown background. I'll never understand this kind of graphic setup, not unlike a lot of liner notes which I eventually give up reading altogether.
I'm especially diggin' Hart's comments and insights with respect to Tony Williams and Roy Haynes.

I got around the colour problem by doing ctrl + a to highlight all the text.

Iverson is an interesting guy. Grew up in west-central Wisconsin, was a child prodigy, and came on the local radar just as Geoff Keezer, another wunderkind from the area, was making his bones. He had to live down a few comparisons, but I'd say he's managed to carve his own niche, don't you think?

I like Iverson's playing plenty, both w/ or w/o the Bad Plus. Really dig the Lazy Afternoon disc w/ Chris Cheek, in particular.
