Pasting Images
I've noticed that many posters have photos or other images included in the body of their posts rather than as an attachment. I still haven't figured out how to do this. Pointers?

to link an image in your posts just click on the IMG button and add or paste the URL where the image is located.
e.g. h**p://myphotos.com/jazzplayer.jpg

Bill--Here are detailed instructions, saved for just such an occasion as this:
HOW TO USE THE IMG FUNCTION (to post pictures from the Internet)
1. Right-click on the image--the picture itself--on the Net. Don't use a Google thumbnail; go to the original site and use the picture there.
2. Click on Properties and copy the URL from the Properties box.
3. Hit the IMG button on JC's Post Reply form.
4. Paste the URL into the form that will pop up and hit "OK." Edit: Are you in Enhanced Mode (look at the top of the Post Reply form, just above the blank box)? If so, do this instead: Paste the URL into your post and hit the IMG button again.
5. A line of code of the following pattern will appear in your message:
This will be all on one line, with no spaces:
At the beginning: [IMG]
In the middle: http://"the URL of your image"
At the end: [/IMG]
Make sure that the "http://" part appears only once, not twice.
(I just edited that four years later, because the line of code all on one line didn't show up anymore!)
6. If you want to, you can type in a line of code of that pattern manually instead of using the IMG button.

Is there a way to do this with a simple, one-button mouse for a Mac?

Hold downthe mouse button and press your control key--a drop down menu will give you options. I usually choose "Open in new window," which shows me jusst what the image looks like, then I copy the url from the top of the window.

is it possible to post images that are only on your computer, not on the web? I'm guessing that the answer is no since the maximum size next to Attach File is 0 bytes, maybe Lois and Mone don't want images sucking up server space, perfectly understandable if that's the case.
anyway, I would like to post pix from last night's Tonic concert without uploading them to my web site, just curious if that was possible, thanks...

You can post your own photos from your computer, provided they're no larger than 400x400(?), I believe. So, you should be able to, once you resize.

Jon--What Cem said. Yes, you can post attachments; lots of people have. Ignore the 0. AFAIK, the max. size isn't actually listed, but the last time the subject came up, Moné said that it was 400 x 400 pixels.
And Lois has just offered to put up your images if you have trouble.

Lois--The last line on the Post Reply form says
Attach file:
Maximum size: 0 bytes
Could you change the 0 to the actual max. for attachments, in KB, pixels, or whatever?

thanks, guys. the 400x400 instructions made it possible, I'm putting up a couple on the eai thread, maybe more later.
Lois/Mone, the other thing that should be changed, if possible, besides what BN said, is that images aren't visible in "Preview Reply" as they are when you're previewing a post that's linking to one on the web. thanks...

I don't think that's possible... when you are linking from another website, you have to wait till it's "published" to activate the link. But of course, I'll leave that to Moné to confirm when he gets back

the img function only works for images hosted on a website. For photos on your own hard drive you would need to post them as an attachment.

Probably a stupid question: what if the picture is too "big," i.e., the limit is 40KB or so and desired image is 90KB or so? I've resized via Infranview but that seems to change nothing. Danke.

Michael, resizing should work. The pictures I post as attachments are usually larger than 1 megabyte in their original size and quality but they can be made smaller than 40kb in size via resizing and adjusting the quality. I'm using acdsee pro, or whatever the version is that lets one do these sort of things. If you keep having problems, I'd be happy to help you (as in you send me the pics and I can resize/adjust the compression rate, quality, and send them back to you).

Michael--
What Gokhan (sp.?) said. I resize with IrfanView all the time; it works. Are you forgetting to Save the resized pic?
And as Gokhan said, there are other variables that one can manipulate with IrfanView so as not to exceed 400 x 400 pixels and 40.0 KB disk size. One of them is "Save quality." When you Save a pic in IrfanView, you can move a pointer on a line/scale to reduce the Save quality. Doing that can reduce the disk size to 40.0 KB or lower and still produce good results.
Finally, I too am willing to resize pics for you if you're having trouble--not a million pics at once, but a few. PM me for my e-mail address if you ever want it.

Blue' and Father Thorne are the JC wiz kids when it comes to posting images...let me tell you, honestly.
I mean, if a computer challenged numbskull like me can do it, so can you. Trust me on this one.
See?

Pardon my ignorance of what others seem to do easily...but I'm confused right at step 1 of these instructions. When I go to a website and right click on an image, what do I do? The choices are to save picture, copy, etc. How do I get to properties after right clicking?
Is there something missing from the instructions or am I failing to see the obvious?

When you right click, "properties" should be the choice at the very bottom of the window that opens.
Does that help?

Thanks Scott. I've discovered a quirk of my browser. I occassionally use the browser supplied by my internet provider because it makes it easier to access my e-mail. But on this browser, "properties" isn't one of the choices after I right click on a picture.
So I tried Netscape and found that I have about twice as many options, including "properties." So I should be okay from here.
