Dave Koz

I'm sure theres alot of disdain for Dave Koz here, except by the "smoothies". I recently bought a used CD by Dave called "Lucky man", through an internet site. As I was looking it over, it dawned on me that Dave actually signed the CD insert! It say Thanks! Dave Koz, and a hand-drawn saxophone. Weird wild stuff

I like Dave Koz better than I like most smooth players.

Yes, I agree with you, Theo. There's a song of his called Blackbird that I think is truly wonderful.

You mean that Dave Koz interprets "Blackbird", written by John Lennon/Paul McCartney as an instrumental on an album of his, right. It's not actually "his" song.

If folks dig this kind of sound, good for them. I can't get past the saccharine, syrupy tone and "corny" (to my ears) arrangements and treatments. I wouldn't characterize my feelings toward Dave Koz as "disdain" as much as I would "disinterest".

Now, Kenny Rankin's reworking* of "Blackbird" on his 1975 album, Silver Morning, or Keith Jarrett's take on "Bye Bye Blackbird" are entirely different stories, at least to my ears.

*In fact, that recording so impressed Paul McCartney that he asked Rankin to represent himself and John Lennon when they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

I got no problem with Dave Koz. Sometimes aural wallpaper is what you want. I don't think what he plays is jazz, but then I'm a cranky old shit.

Not a fan of his although I do like the theme to "General Hospital." He does a syndicated radio show on the local smooth station (KKSF) that I catch infrequently and he ususally interviews someone. The last interview I heard was with Brian Culbertson, who I do like a lot. By the way, you can get KKSF online, I believe and if you are interested, I think this show comes on either early Saturday or Sunday morning.

I don't buy many records. The only one I have by Culbertson is "Something "Bout Love," which I enjoy quite a bit.
