Blows Reynolds' "Jersey Theory" right out of the water.

"We can conclusively say that Neanderthals had nothing to do with modern humans," said Dr. Berhane Asfaw, a co-leader of the discovery team from Rift Valley Research in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
I'm holding out for the multiregional origin thesis and specifically for an ancestral role for the Neanderthals. Only Neanderthal descent could account for some of the people who post in political threads in the Alley.

JeeeZUZ, bn! What did a Neanderthal ever do to you to deserve that comparison??!?!?

On topic, a great find, certainly from an interesting period of our recent evolution. What I'd really like to see, though, are some good solid finds in the 5+ million years ago frame, detailing the fork from the other apes. Unfortunately, lots of our ancestors' time in that period was spent in rain-forest-type places, notoriously bad environments to die and be preserved for the ages. Stupid apes, no consideration for the future!

What's a good place for me to die, if I want to be dug up as a fossil and put on display in a future museum?

Some place with rapid sedimentation (a good mudslide or lava flow might do, though admittedly, those qualify as extremely rapid :), tar pits, peat bogs - you know, the classics. In general, keep out of those wet, humid, bacteria-loving environments - don't keel over in your compost pile, for example.

Jeez, Scott. Nobody mentioned your name...

Too bad we can't bring George Lincoln Rockwell back to life and tell him he's African. Jeez, what ever happened to the "White Power" lunatics, anyway? They seem to have fallen off the radar screen, especially since 9/11. Maybe they feel John Ashcroft is one of their own?

Then again, never mind, I don't want to know.

Well, they did finally arrest Eric Robert Rudolph. Every couple of years they bust some "splinter Klan" group out in the woods here, usually a drunken fool who's pissed off because he's drunk and a fool.

Seriously, if you want to know where they are, read the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Report.

I think the connection between Neanderthals and the European avant garde* is too intuitively correct to be dismissed on the basis of mear scientific evidence.

I'm pretty fascinated by the fact, rapidly accepted by most in the relevant neighborhoods of the scientific community I'm told, that there's simply no biological basis for the notion of "race" - that it's a mere social construct, - like the notion of god, for instance.
