The anniversary of the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert, too.

It must have been something to witness. Webb may have won the battle, but the Count won the war. He has the big band for the ages in 1938.

Too bad that Chick Webb died in 1939.

As I recall, Jimmy Lunceford's band smoked just about everybody in those days.

Imagine giving Benny Goodman's famous Carnegie Hall concert second billing!

Does anyone seriously think Chick Webb had a great band?

Scott-

The BGCHC has had so much press over the decades....and no one on this forum even bother to mention it at all save for this thread.

Did Chick Webb have a great band? Yes. Why don't you think so?

Also....hahahaha...this is likely the totally wrong forum for the discussion of swing bands. Contact me off forum and we can discuss the issue with like minded people.

Chick Webb's band was good but Lunceford was better, as was Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy.

1938 Swing

Anyone remember Al Cooper's Savoy Sultans, who also regularly performed at the Savoy during this era? I'm looking for one of his arrangements.
