"P" Artists

OK, you think "P", there must be a ton of artists I love with last names beginning with "P". So you scroll through some lists to refresh your memory and, gee, not a lot. Oh, Picasso, of course, though I'm not as enamored as others and they'll be posting plenty besides. But where do you go from there? Some second line Italians like Pontormo and Parmegianino (well, Perugino, too, have to give some credit), some Poussin....Can't wait 'til the "R"s.

But then there IS Praxiteles---

On a more personal note, I studied for a couple of years with Alton Pickens, an amazing teacher. Through Alton, I met Joe McPhee back around 1975. McPhee has composed a suite in his honor (Pickens died in the early 90s) which will hopefully be released one day (I heard it live a couple of years ago--very lovely). Very little of his work is on the web as near as I can determine, but here's a drawing:

Tom Phillips. His "treated Victorian novel," A Humument is one of the masterpieces of book art. He took a Victorian novel called A Human Document and painted all the pages, leaving remanants of text to form a new "story," whose hero is named "toge," from the word together which appears frequently. Phillips is a true renaissance man. He is a painter of realistic portraits, has translated and illustrated Dante's Inferno as well as collaborating on a video version of it with Peter Greenaway for Channel Four. He is also a composer--he did an opera called "Irma" and composes lots of music for BBC productions. I met him several times in the 80's and visited his studio in London once. He's a cordial curmudgeon.

He has done multiple versions of A Humument. Here are 2 versions of the same page.

Pete, not sure if you're aware, but 'Irma' is available on Matchless and features members of AMM among others. Personally, I don't think it works too well, but....

Editor's note: In 2002, the Royal Mint selected a design by Tom Phillips for the £5 coin to be circulated in commemoration of the Queen's Coronation Jubilee.
