Houston TX jazz opportunities

Hello all. I am moving south to Houston mid August with my gal and we are both searching out the happenings in this sweltering town. Having recently gotten off the road with the Glenn Miller Orchestra last April, I am eager to continue to play, and curious about what Houston has to offer.

If anyone knows some folks that's be worth getting in contact with or even any spots that we should definitely check out, it would be greatly appreciated! Despite the non jazz content I'm about to spill...I'm a vegetarian too so I could use a little help there as well.

talk to ya,

My sons, who play punk and jazz, and are frequently in Houston for gigs, and are vegan/vegetarian, and run around with that crowd, will certainly be happy to help you out with the food thang...Dave Dove will help you find a jazz home.

Definitely get in touch with Dave Dove. His organization, the Pauline Oliveros Foundation, has brought Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker, and Oliveros herself to Houston in just the last couple of months.

Also, check out Sound Exchange. It's a pretty cool little record store, and they send out a weekly e-mail newsletter with upcoming concert information.

As for vegetarian food: two of my favorite restaurants are Madras Pavilion (South Indian kosher vegetarian cuisine) on Kirby just north of 59; and Dimassi's (Lebanese buffet) in Rice Village. The best grocery store is Central Market.
