SF Jazz

Been sick so haven't seen anything much since McCoy. Made two donations to Yoshi's for sets I missed so I've been laying off for a while.

And I liked McCoy's second week much better than the first. I didn't dig DeJohnette the first week and I felt the line up just overpowered McCoy. Can't remember who was drumming the second week and too lazy to check my journal. All I know was the second week worked better for me and the drummer was just exceptional.

Hi Rainy...I've missed you. I was gonna e-mail and decided to wait.

Anyway, we will be in California - hopefully SF as well - in June for a couple of dates. I'll let you all know as soon as something is confirmed. Mike Schwartz is also working on an appearance for us at San Jose Jazz Fest in August. We're waiting with fingers crossed!

It's easier to travel with my current trio, Yells At Eels, but now the question is, who will guest with us? There are so many great players out west...

Anyway, it remains to be seen if we'll actually be invited out to SJJF. Soon as we know Yea or Nay, I'll post it!

San Francisco Bay Area Jazz Scene

I didn't like PBW for my screen name, hence my new one.
Just thought we should get the Bay Area on the new site.
There will be a couple of cool Yoshi's gigs posted here soon.

Peter, as long as you're getting us back on the map, it was suggested on another thread that I lobby you to look into getting Charles Tolliver & Music Inc out here. I don't know if they are doing more than a "one-off" in Massachussetts (see 3/27 on the new calendar), but to see Tolliver, Cecil McBee and Stanley Cowell together would be unbelievable.

I'm planning on SJ this year barring unexpected events. Hope you can make it Dennis.

I'm going to get this style thing right if it kills me.

I started a SF Jazz thread yesterday. Is there some way to merge them?

Peter, they sounded great in NY last year. I saw Tolliver, Cowell, McBee, and Clifford Barbaro. That concert led me to start the "Charles Tolliver Still Has It" thread. I believe Billy Hart is replacing Barbaro for the U Mass. concert.

E-mail Lois to merge the 2...
It was discussed eons ago to call it 'SF Bay Area' instead of just 'SF' to call it as we live it;-)

Well, if we are going to whine about it, I started the SF Jazz thread first. But the title was apparently offensive. Jeez, I'm sorry already.

Who are you all looking forward to seeing in the near future?

I'll more than likely check out Elvin Jones and Kenny Garrett next month at Yoshi's.

Rainy: you're still tops with me.

Jason G: Good question, I'm looking forward to McBride, Elvin, Abbey, Cyrus, and Garrett.
Frisell in May and Bruford.

Also, some great SFJazz shows, the Haden, Redman, Redman show, Chucho and GOnzalo, and Randy Weston.

... and let's not forget the great, legendary Hank Jones. There may not be many more chances to see this man, especially on the West Coast.

As you probably already know, he's been canceling out of most gigs for awhile now due to health problems. I sure hope he's up to doing this gig (and many others)!

FWIW and to clarify if that's possible, I e-mailed Lois to please consolidate to THIS thread title that PETER put up, which much better tells what & where we are since "SF Jazz" can mean Healdsburg to Monterey and all places in between

And speaking of my town Healdsburg... just in: this year's festival will feature Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Lovano, Abbey Lincoln and James Newton among others. Here's a brief promo, I'll post full details on its own thread.

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

The 5th annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival is proud to present the North Bay debut of legendary vocalist Abbey Lincoln, the last of the great jazz divas, headlining a spectacular June 8 outdoor double bill concert with flute virtuoso James Newton at the picturesque Rodney Strong Vineyards. Lincoln’s much-anticipated performance will be the culmination of a weeklong celebration of jazz at an annual event that has become one of the North Bay’s premiere festivals.

The festival kicks off Sunday, June 1, at a free outdoor concert in Healdsburg Plaza, featuring Afro-Cuban drumming master Tacuma King and the Children’s Percussion Workshop, the Healdsburg High School Jazz Band, and the Khalil Shaheed Sextet.

The festival continues with two consecutive nights of gourmet jazz and wine dinners at chef/owner Charlie Palmer’s acclaimed Dry Creek Kitchen (June 2 and 3); an evening with Angela Wellman’s New Roots (June 4); a gala dinner and opening night concert at Chateau Sovereign with 15-year-old Sonoma County jazz guitar phenom Julian Lage, drummer Billy Hart, and bassist Ray Drummond (June 5); and showcase concerts featuring Bobby Hutcherson, George Cables, and Ray Drummond (June 6); the Mary Stallings Quartet (June 7); and Joe Lovano & Friends with guest vocalist Judi Silvano (June 7) ending with the grand finale at Rodney Strong (June 8).

The Healdsburg Jazz Festival, under the guidance of artistic director Jessica Felix, is presented in association with the Healdsburg Arts Council.

That's a shocker about Hank.
This past summer at Stanford had boundless skip in his step and brilliance in performance, seemed like a young 60ish as opposed to his actual 84.

Charles Lloyd Quartet was in terrific form on Monday in Santa Cruz.
Geri Allen carried the gig in my eyes [& ears] absolutely outstanding!
Robert Hurst, bass, the most impressive set from him that I've yet seen; one bowed solo particularly seperb, and the drummer, whose name escapes me for the moment was super strong, the same line-up from SF Fest this past fall.

I like Lloyd, but will never be the same since Pete C. on one of these discussison boards described him as "Coltrane on Qualudes" or something like that;-))))

Mike, you forgot Billy Hart's name?

I agree, Geri was the highlight when I saw them. I otherwise didn't much care for the group.

Quaaludes? I don't use such language. I said Valium.

Did they do the show stopping "You Are So Beautiful"?

I just CAN'T get the drummers name in my head, but it was not Hart... was it he who was at SF Fest?

I'm probably flashing back to HS days... Valium were not the favored recreational commodity as Qualudes were in the company we used to keep [just going with information that SOMEONE TOLD ME about/ha-ha]

As for "You Are So Beautiful" it was the encore, and I'm the wrong guy to ask about that song, which I sang to my daughter from her earliest days, the one that she wants to dance with me to at her wedding when the time comes...and they didn't quite do it 'straight' as was your complaint at SF, he blew over it after stating the theme. There go those damn jazz musicians changing things up all the time;-)
