There's three or four jazz things on the bill. What do you mean bye bye? It can't all be jazz, since it's an a.g. festival, not a jazz festival.

I'd go for

KEIJI HAINO SOLO
NELS CLINE / ANDREA PARKINS / TOM RAINEY
SATOKO FUJII MIN-YOH ENSEMBLE
SUNN 0)))

but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get up there. If I can, I'd go on a day when one or more of these were playing.

You're right, I don't know Fieldwork or some of these other groups. I'm just used to seeing a buncha jazz things that I recognize. The line-ups last year and this one remind more of New Music America. And I know that it's supposed to represent new music but it seems to get noisier, of course if the last Erstquake is any indication, so is everything........

There's some great stuff for sure, but nothing to make me jump on the next plane. I've been wanting to hear Nels/Andrea/Tom thing for a while. Any major "can't misses" there?

We've got KK Null coming to Rime for 2 nights. I've liked what I've heard from him here & there, but was wondering, if anyone more intimately familiar with much of his past work could share. letch?

I'd not miss Haino or SUNN0))), either, if they were within a reasonable distance, Cem.

It's a black-metal band that has recently been moving into some very interesting areas that meet up with the "noise/electronic" quadrant, as in a recent collaboration with Oren Ambarchi. I'd never have guessed a development in metal that would've held any interest for me, but that's the best part about surprises, and also a lesson in thinking any of us can predict musical developments, esp, as in this case with me, in areas of music that one knows next to nothing about.

I'd drive up to V-ville for that one, if I'm able to get the time.

I've caught Haino live...impressive! Not familiar with the latter.

I'm with you re: surprises, Gary. That's the best thing about checking out copious events at a good festival.

I'll do a bit more research on some of the others unfamiliar to me. Any excuses to get pickled in good company at the Colibri bar...

their most recent, Black One, seems to be generally considered their best (this is the one Oren is on, not that you can tell). here's a review:

FWIW, it's good for that area of music, but I'm not really a fan. I did buy a copy of Black One, but it was the limited edition double disc version that I plan to sell at some point on eBay.

I'd recommend Keiji Haino's stuff for you before Sunn, Steve, if you've never heard either. Fushitsusha especially would blow your mind, but make sure you get one of the good ones...

I would think that Double Live 2CD (PSF 15/16) and Pathetique (PSF 50) being the cream of a very fine crop. There are many other fine ones too...and I agree that I would recommend someone check out Fushitsusha before Sunn0))). Personally I think Black One is pretty by the numbers of the new heavy handed doom metal stuff. I like Boris much better as far as bands go but they also get further out into soundscape land than Sunn0))) do. If I wasn't moving I would get out Grimm Robe and spin that one for a comparison since I seem to remember liking it better than Black One. I do have hopes that Sunn0)))'s current direction will take them further out though....

as far as neo-metal, the best record I've heard is probably Sleep-Dopesmoker, this one has Sisco written all over it:

Cool, I look into it.

Steve -- I like all of SUNN0)))'s Southern Lord releases except Grimm Robes Demo, to which I was entirely indifferent, but I think the best is Black One, but only if you can get the double CD that includes the live performance with Oren Ambarchi. I also dig Haino and would second Jon's commentary above.

I haven't heard Boris or Sleep but will check them out eventually based on the above.

Needless to say, I'm far from up on metal. I can only talk about what I've heard, which isn't a hell of a lot more than what I've already talked about.

I like the Earth CD on Southern Lord quite a lot, also, and Twilight's CD also but less so (it has its moments but they sometimes require some waiting to get to them).

Too much music!

Ah yes. I still have my copy of Jerusalem (aka "Dopesmoker") and listen to it (as well as the earlier Holy Mountain) very often. Great review, by the way, although that "Cisnero = he who works with swans" translation is quite sketchy, I should say. But it's a nice historical overview and the Sabbath references are quite correct, I'd say.

I really like Electric Wizard's Dopethrone which was inspired by this record. Now that you mention Gary's proclivities, this one also has Sisco written all over it........

I wonder who from here made it...? KK Null, Marino Pliakas & Michael Wertmüller were fucking loud & intense here at Rime! Two great mesmerizing performances, very, very loud, thoroughly enjoyable, very creative & locked in trio, bad attendance (Vancouver is so lame), great vibe! I wonder how their Victo performance at the Colisée (hockey arena) was, after a 96-seater Turkish restaurant...

I just got sent this photo from KK Null, taken here after their second show. I don't know who the fat guy on the right is...

A buddy of mine that came to Vizz last year (along with his *incredibly* nice wife) went, against my advice, to Victo for a couple days and absolutely hated it. There is no chance he will ever go back.

Wow! Thanks, Captain. I have not found a single account anywhere, but I suspected such a response -as I might've reacted- from folks with more of a jazz bent than noise & electronica. I bet it was successful in terms of turn out, as Fantomas/Patton heads must've flocked there. In retrospect, artistically, Patton as "Artist In Residence" kind of programming didn't make sense to me, along with the lack of the usual balance in much of the booking this year, at least from afar.
