Yes.

I have been thinking of doing the same thing myself here in our 'olde towne'.

My keyboard 'skills' are very limited, but I am very endearing and know a lot of tunes and make so many mistakes that people cheer me on when I get it right.

Let me know how it goes for you.

If you're good and playing on the street or subway, people will respond. You've got a much larger pool of potential contributors than at your regular gig (do you work for just tips there?). I think people are very happy to get a surprise greeting from music (or any kind of street performance) well done. I never hesitate to give a buck to a good musician or group, even if it's a style I don't normally love. Those dollars (or even quarters) really add up in a well trafficked area. I suspect relative youth works in your favor too.

I found that..interesting? I mean, we just set up outside this store and a big crowd gathers around. I was a little self-conscious that the girls who were putting on an erotic show in the window of the little sex shop behind us were uncomfortable with all the people our band was attracting.
