How do they do it?

I'm always aghast at how the New Jersey folk support jazz the way they do. We come from the same ethnic stock, eat the ssame food, have pretty much the same background. Yet I live in a jazz desert, about the same distance from Manhattan, whlle they support a number of jazz clubs with big names and small, and have regular concerts by jazz greats. The New Jersey Jazz society is a fine active group, while two such groups have gone belly up here on Lon g Island. Puzzle. More power to them. If you live in NJ and don't support them, you're doing both them and jazz a disservice.

They are indeed primarily a trad jazz kind of bunch. But if you give some of these folks a shot you may be surprised how hot and mixed the sound can be.

Kenny Davern and Ed Polcer especially (and most of the others generally) don't just try to recreate the old 78's. They use the standards to keep making things new.

Gambarini/Alden/Burr should also be a great combination.

Jonathan, my remark was a reference to the fact that the sponsor is the manufacturer of Ambien. No slight intended.

I'm a great fan of their product!

Pete C, no prob, though I fear what your reaction may have been if the sponsor was the maker viagra or cialis...

Come to think of it, most of the audience for traditional jazz is of an age where those products may be more popular...

And alas I have also been to traditional jazz events where any form of medicinals would have been welcome.
