Gawd, I'm lucky!
This morning I received not one, but three different letters from Nigeria offering to make me rich. At this rate, I'm gonna own the place.
Anybody want it???

Jesus, are they still running that tired old scam? I thought that one had died off years ago.

I never read Spam, I just delete them in bulk. If I don't know you, I'm not opening the email. Simple as that.

Being glib is one thing. Sharing your secret(s) with your pals is quite another.
Yes, I'm fully aware that you've made remarks along the way, but a fuller "recipe" for success might be greatly appreciated by many.

Brother, if I knew what I was doing that was so different from what everyone else is, I'd be the first to share.
But I honestly don't know.

Fair enough, though I'd hoped for something different. I didn't mean to imply that you were "holding back", Scott.
I've applied everything I know to the problem of spam, and while I've made a huge dent, I'm far from spam-free.

Sadly, my wife was telling me a story of a senior citizen that fell for one of these scams out of Nigeria in our home town. They lost 2500. They came into the bank where she worked and ask if they could intervene, of course they could do nothing. If One in a thousand hits, they'll keep it up the bastards!

And that's the thing. Businesses that use snail-mailers as their main means of soliciting new buiness consider a 1% return rate a good rate. I would imagine that these Nigerian clowns do also. Now, with the internet being able to contact millions of addresses that don't block spam, their return rate is probably similar. Something for nothing is still a powerful lure.

You can't avoid spam. You give out your e-mail address, somebody will fuck it up and send you an online greeting card, and bam, you're in a database.
Y'all should be using gmail. I have no qualms, whatsoever, about using my gmail address for business sites now, because the spam filtering is fantastic. I'd say no more than four or five have made it to my inbox in the year-plus that i've been using it. It gets routed to a spam folder, and unlike Yahoo, once I report the thing, I don't see any more messages from the same people. Unless your place of business is forcing you, you should never have to use a POP3 program again.

I disagree. My buddy, who really got me into this whole computerized world, never gets any either.
And your greeting card theory doesn't stand up. My brother, especially when he's deployed overseas, send me plenty of online greeting cards.

Then you can thank your e-mail host, I suppose. Otherwise, you and your buddy are just incredibly lucky.

That doesn't wash either.
We're obviously doing something different. Besides, I've had several different ISP's over the years, it's not the host.

You're doing something different but you don't know what it is. Whatever, Scott. Why don't you give me your e-mail address and we can test your defenses, because frankly, I think you're full of it.
I've spent many years doing e-mail administration and can tell you 100% that there isn't a damned thing you can do to your system that will prevent you from getting spam.
The only precaution you can take is to be careful in who you give your e-mail address out to, and even that isn't a precaution when they send you an eCard from some fly-by-night company or e-mail you their Amazon wishlist. It doesn't take much.

I've wondered about this too. When I was with GIS, I only rarely received any spam, maybe once a week, without doing anything on my part. Since switching to Verizon a little over a year ago, I haven't received a SINGLE piece of spam. Again, I didn't set up any filters or nuthin'. My e-mail address is around, too. I've received mailings from places I've done e-business with like e-bay or amazon, but that's it. No Nigerian mailings!

AOL sends my spam directly to the spam box, but I'm still interested in who's spamming me. so I go read the Sender line!
They sometimes make a mistake reading which is Spam and which is not. But it's not bad.
Brian, you've never had penis spam?

I'm tellin' ya, nothing! No Viagra, no rod-extenders, no offers of fame and fortune.
Now, at my work mail, I get these "quarantined" messages a couple times a day, generally having to do with shady pharmaceutical sales. Presumably, these are targeted at hospitals? Because I don't use my e-address from work anywhere outside of work. Dunno.
I should say that, if there's some overly-anal (in a good way) program atwork behind the scenes at Verizon, I haven't noticed any legit e-mail not getting through. So.....

I rarely get spam, but I also rarely give out my email address. I don't use it to register for anything on websites. I have an alternate, free email address for that. I get spam on that one, but it's not too terrible, maybe an average of 1 a day.

I don't know why you're not taking advantage of this amazing free offer, sexy!!! I mean, you're receiving this e-mail because you requested information from one of our subscription services, you know? I don't know why you ask for it unless you want it bad. If you're not going to call, why did you ask? Come on, Mr. Big Dick...click here now!!!

Oh, my God. I'm so totally embarrassed. This is because I called you Peter, isn't it? It's not my fault, baby, I swear to God!!! The automailers just guess on initials. I knew it was Paul all along, I promise. This is so humiliating. Honest to God, if you just click here, it'll never happen again. Come on (my face!!), hottie: my juices are still flowing for you!!!

What did I do? Won't you at least tell me what I did wrong? I just want to talk to you. I'm so lonely. Did I come on too strong? With, like, the dirty talk and stuff? I'm not normally like that, I swear. I thought...I dunno. I thought we had, like, a thing...like, I dunno, a connection or something. I mean, I'm not saying...I don't want to be your "girlfriend" or something. I just want you to click here. Could we maybe just try it, and see how it works out? Is this because I said I was cum-drunk? I was totally exaggerating. It's not like I'm addicted or anything. I could quit any time I wanted to. Do you want me to quit?

Oh, I see how it is. You've got plenty of time for Chantee over at stickitin.com, but you're too busy to even give ol' Katie a call or return her messages. Do you think she's prettier than me? Is that it? Don't you think my HAIRLESS CLAM looks good? I did it specially for you. Let me tell you something: Chantee's not even a co-ed. She dropped out six years ago. She's, like, thirty. Well, I won't stand in your way. I hope you two are very happy together, and I hope you can live with yourself, just ignoring me and thowing me in the trash whenever you feel bored with me. Whatever. Don't bother to click here.

Hi. It's Katie! From whowantsit.net? Remember me? Hi!!! How have you been? I was just looking over my old address books and I saw your name and just freaked. Because, you know, I haven't heard from you in SO LONG! So, I thought I'd just drop you a line and see what you were up to and everything. Because, I mean, I'm still hot and horny and hungry for your hefty honker, if you were still into that kind of thing. Anyway, you could click here, if you wanted to. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
