I can't name a hyperlink

I've lost the ability to give a name to a hyperlink when it displays, to merge the link seamlessly with text. Something seems to have changed. The popup box for links used to first ask for the text to display, then the link address, but I'm no longer prompted for text. It seems that others can still do this however. I tried switching my editing preferences to enhanced wysiwyg, but it still doesn't work in either Firefox or IE. Does anybody have any ideas (I'm betting on Rita).

Pete--

Somehow I doubt that the browser is relevant, but if it is, I can speak about only IE.

Yes, other posters can still "name" links; in WYSIWYG, which is all I use, I still can.

I'm off to buy nicotine poison, but when I get back, I'll look at how (and whether) it can be done in all three editing modes, and then I'll post instructions (unless someone beats me to it).

Edit: On second thought, I might be able to clear it up right now, at least for WYSIWYG. Type or Paste the desired "name" and highlight it, then click the "links" icon and enter the URL in the resulting popup box.

That works. Was that always an option?

When you enter the URL at the prompt and hit <Enter>, you get the hyperlink properly html formatted, followed by the same URL in a "cut and paste" text block in a contrasting color, blue on my machine. Manually type the name of the link in the BLOCK.

Hope that's clear. I've noticed this on other forums using this software. Must be an upgrade. It's a feature, not a bug.

It was an option in the version of vB that preceded this one, IIRC. I don't remember whether it was an option before that.

(I edited my previous post--of course, one can also Paste the desired "name" rather than type it.)

I've never used the method that Deadlift describes. It doesn't seem relevant to WYSIWYG. I'll still take a look at the other two editing modes, just to see for myself.

I can't figure out which editing mode(s) one needs to be in to use Deadlift's method. But in any case, I'd recommend doing the following, which sounds simpler to me:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enhanced (WYSIWYG) editing mode:

Here is a link to the Daily Kos.

Yep, I used this method:

----------------------------------------------------------------
Standard editing mode:

Here is a link to the Daily Kos.

I used the same method (the one quoted above).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic editing mode:

Here is a link to the Daily Kos.

There's no link icon (and therefore no popup) in the Reply form. AFAIK, one needs to type in a phrase of the following pattern, only without the asterisks:

[*URL="http://www.dailykos.com/"]the Daily Kos.[/URL*]

If one wants to produce "named" links, it would be a lot simpler to switch editing modes, IMO.

Don't sell yourself short, Pete. With a positive, can-do attitude, you can do anything you put your mind to. For starters, I think John and Susan are both fine choices.

You don't have to cut or paste

all you need to do is highlight the link the word you want to link such as jazzcorner then you hit the link (thats the icon with the little globe) and jazzcorner - it will prompt you to put in the whole url and voila

This is what I get using the method I describe above, standard or WYSIWYG:

I've noticed that you can't paste in a link and then rename it.

Lois, that's what I wrote:

One would Paste the "name," the URL, or both only to avoid typing them manually and having to memorize them.

That option isn't available in Basic editing mode, though; there's no "links" icon.

Deadlift, I can only suggest that you try the method quoted above (and see #6 re accomplishing the same thing in Basic editing mode).

AFAIK, nope, not unless you've done it manually (by typing in the whole coded expression). But there's no reason to create a named link that way unless you're in Basic editing mode, IMO.

You either delete the linked "name" and start over, or you unlink it using this icon and then start over. It's not a big deal, right?

I'm glad, Stoner. Which method did you use--the one that Lois and I described or the one that Deadlift described?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hyperlinking 2.0:

One can also link to an image in one's post instead of a "name":

To do that,

In Enhanced (WYSIWYG) editing mode, insert the image, then highlight the image by sweeping over it with your mouse. That takes a little practice, but it can be done. Then click the "links" icon and fill in the URL as described above.

Instructions for the other two editing modes will have to come some other time or from somebody other than me.

O-kay!

I named my hyperlink Hypatia (which happens to be the name of another DC Dean Democrat).

Not to mention the name of a prominent adult film actress of the early 80s. From what I've been told, anyway.

I was going to offer Mr. Pete C some proper names to call his links a couple of days ago. But I refrained because I didn't want y'all to think I was a smartass...
