Spiders?

A look at "Who's Online" lists a whole bunch of user names like "Yahoo! Slurp Spider" and "Google Spider."

What's that all about? Is the site always filled with those, or is JC seeking them out?

On behalf of the worms, I'd like to welcome the spiders.

Sounds like I'm on another planet. I'm obviously missing something here, a whoooole lot of something.

Why would search engines be in with usernames?[Please, don't tell me they're in love.]

Basically these spiders are the good kind of spiders - their job is to find new web pages and then make sure that they make it to search results. Website designers rely on those spiders to find their page so that other users can also find the page. They find new pages by following links. Basically this whole forum is a giant link buffet for the spiders, and they'll go through each of the threads systematically. Its just a program though, and it doesn't actually "read" the thread.

There are "bad" spiders which follow the same pattern, except they are looking specifically for email addresses to sell to list distributors - spammers. Its usually suggested that if you're posting your email address on the internet to mangle it so that its recognizable by people, but not by the spiders. For example: "docmartin@email.com" can become "sample *AT* email *DOT* com". The people who read it can decipher it, but the bot can't.

So, a cookie would be a type of spider, or a spider is a sophisticated cookie?

I've heard that it's good to mangle your email address because of hackers. Huh, what makes a spider bad is what it's being used for.

Thanks.

That trick is so old, I would think the bots have been programmed for it? It doesn't matter what I do. Every spammer has my email address. It is too late.

Larry,

Things are great for me these days. It is great to see an old friend here from the JCS days. Expect to see me post around here more than I have in the past. If you would like to get in touch with me, try jazzstage@gmail.com. I have recently been in touch with Shap dog (AKA Matt). I would be glad to forward his email to you. Has Bruce dropped off the map or does he still post?
