Here's a man who really made me laugh. Coincidentally, I've just been trying to convince my daughter that she'd like The Incredible Mr. Limpett. Now she has no choice.

RIP and thanks for all the yucks.

By all means, GG, find a copy of The Incredible Mr. Limpett. I loved it when I saw it when it was first released in theatres and your daughter will too.

RIP Mr Knotts. You made me laugh.

His cameo appearence in IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD is masterful. Great facial expressions and physical comedy and that voice!

He should have had more opportunities like that. I was sorry to see him become typecast as a hayseed cop, even though the character portrayal was complete and genius.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

"One of the interesting things about this movie is that a certain amount of its humor flows from having some knowledge of the actors involved. For example, there's a scene where Phil Silvers — cast in his eternal role as an avaricious con-artist — is in desperate need of a ride somewhere....

So Silvers flags down a car and as it pulls up, we see that its driver is Don Knotts. Enormous laugh. Even before anything is said or done to Mr. Knotts by Mr. Silvers, the audience is laughing...because they know that Phil Silvers is a predator and Don Knotts is prey, and the match-up just seems so perfect as to be funny. It's like a joke where the set-up is so good, you're chuckling long before you get anywhere near the punch line.

In the above scene, we were laughing before we even saw that the driver was Don Knotts. We all knew it would be Don Knotts because we all knew the movie. So we laughed before we saw Don and, when we finally did, we applauded him."

Now here's a thread title for hardcore fans of the Andy Griffith Show, if not all fans of Don Knotts.

I first enjoyed Don on the Steve Allen Show, where his antics with Louis Nye (and others) were hysterical.

Remember Don's signature response to the question "Are you nervous?"

I always loved this guy. Sad.

R.I.P., Don Knotts~

Every morning I travel down Don Knotts Blvd at WVU to go to work, past where he studied speech at the old classrooms there, it travels along side the Monongehela river as it goes on to Pittsburgh. I remember when they dedicated it to him, he had tears in his eyes. I really enjoyed this man and his work. What bumbling cop IS NOT called Barney even nowadays! The Picture shows President of WVU Dr. Hardesty, presenting the sign to Don, with Senator Olivero and Senator Prezioso present beside him.

Thought he was terrible in Three's Company, but it's hardly worth saying so since I have to admit that I was still watching it at that point. But no question, he was one of a kind and in the right part he was brilliant.

Thank you GG. I absolutely hated "Three's Company" and felt badly for Knotts being involved in that one joke silliness.
Knotts was an actor whose talents were wasted on that series, IMO.

"The Andy Griffiths Show" gave Knotts' Barney Fife a certain quirky dignity. Three's Company did not do that. Mr Furley was a sad parody. But, of course, none of the characters in the latter series had the authenticity of the former. But, maybe it's just me.

His Hamlet was brilliant.

Don Knotts was possessed of some very fine attributes for comedy. That crazy face, the rail thin physique. I grew up knowing Knotts as Barney, but my wife prefers the movies with Tim Conway (Apple Dumpling Gang, Private Eyes, etc). He enlivened anything he was in.

Sitcoms were it for me during my younger days. And the supporting actor in a sitcom was so often the key (eg Maynard G Krebbs, Buddy and Sally, Leo Schnauzer, Eddie Haskell, etc.)

But nobody was better as a supporting actor in a sitcom than Don Knotts as Barney Fife. And no sitcom holds up more - as far as evoking laughter and heart than the Andy Griffith show, thanks largely to Barney.

Mike and Mike (the ESPN morning radio show) signed off this morning by having a whistle-along to the tune of the Andy Griffith show. You bet I whistled.

RIP, tough guy.

There is still nothing funnier on television than Deputy Barney Fife. Knotts' brilliant comedic acting created a diminutive giant, still the standard-bearer for the insecure egoist. I've never laughed at anything more than the episode where Fife has to be talked through the recitation of the Preamble to the Constitution. Rest in peace, Don Knotts.

He never did get to use that one bullet

I loved Knotts too.

My pick for funniest episode is the one where he, Otis, and Flloyd are kidnapped by the female escaped convicts ("Hello, Doll").

Oh, and that other guy was much funnier on Three's Company (the actor from Catch 22).

Knotts seemed like a genuine sweetheart irl. RIP Barney

I'm with Thorney in my admiration for Don Knotts which dates from the old Steve Allen show.

IMHO that is still the funniest late night show ever.

I think his greatest contribution to The Andy Griffith Show was his creative input.

Let's be perfectly honest here, folks. Once he left and the show went color, it sucked. I mean, it really sucked.

Nah, the worst one was.....shit wtf was his name...the mild-mannered geek who was on towards the end of the run (and also in that other show, RFD)....help me think of this guy.

Anyway, I laughed a few times at the what/huh what/huh what/huh routine, but I was a young kid at the time. That guy was originally part of a comedy duo with (of all people) George Carlin.
