The JC Group Giveaway/Review - Jaco Pastorius Big Band - The Word Is Out

The Word Is Out

Actually I don't this has even been released in the stores, yet. I got my copy a few weeks and can't stop listening to it. So I contacted the record company (Heads Up) and they generous donated 10 cds for our group cd giveaway and review.

This is an amazing record folks.

Just look at the band members.

I just realized the release date isn't till March 28th. That's why I have no reviews to post! So yours will be among the first. Still have copies left.

This CD is currently in our feature rotation at KSJS. I heard a cut from it on Monday, while I was driving up to KSJS, and I'll probably be playing a cut from it on my show tomorrow.

Wazzup All!
Just a preliminary impression. I gave it a whirl on The System last night and I agree with Lois 110%, an amazing record. Hell, the opening track alone with Peter Erskine mightily fronting the Big Band is worth the price of admission by itself, what a killa opening number! The majority of the players have history with Jaco, this is one of the most loving, respectful, and thoughtful 'tribute' albums I've ever heard. One last thing, as any Big Band fan can tell you, the volume control should be set for IMPACT! There's quite a few 'moments' on this one so there's definetely more to come.

Thanks, Lois!

After one listen, I like this. I will post a fuller review after another listen.

I told you. You gotta trust me. When I said it was awesome, I meant it. No hype needed.

So has everyone got it? Including Gerardo and Head Man?

If you have let's set a date for reviews ok. How about April 10th?
Does that work for everyone?
Peace and glad to hear the excitement.

Got it this morning. Played twice (in the background) and it is one joyous rollicking mass of music.

I'll be getting the SACD as soon as I can find it!

Hi Lois. Well I haven't received it yet but that's quite normal (US mail regularly takes around 2 weeks or more to get here). But April 10 sounds good to me too; I'm looking forward to hearing it!

Gerardo, we sent it out from Jazzcorner offices, so I'm a little concerned. We have the confirmation if we need it. If you don't get by Tuesday, please pm or email me and I'll ask Telarc to send it out to you directly since I don't have anymore copies.

Peace
Lois

Ok, here's my review:

I confess to being somewhat dubious of the concept when I first heard of this CD (not that stopped me from asking for a free copy!) I knew Jaco's work principally in the fusion area, and wasn't sure it would transfer well to the big band format.

By and large, it does-- and quite well. The big band is tight, and the charts are mostly very well-written. The highlights of the record for me, though, are some of the guest artists' solos: Toots Thielmans' harmonica on "Las Olas"; Mike Stern's Metheney-esque guitar on "Sirabhorn"; Jimmy Haslip's bass on "Kuru" (a stand-out even on an album full of great bass playing).

Jaco's "Three Views of a Secret" works beautifully as a big-band ballad, though "Good Morning Anya" sounds a little corny in this arrangement. The medley of "Blackbird/ Word of Mouth" also sounds corny when it starts with a soprano sax lead, but it picks up steam with Richard Bona's bass solo, and then turns into a nice Latin vamp, with some tasty trumpet work from Arturo Sandoval.

The disc ends nicely with Jaco's own bass playing on "Reza" (electronically removed from a tape of a live performance, with the big band playing around him).

All in all, a fun record and a good tribute to Jaco the composer.

I'll be interested to read some of your reviews. I'm finding this album a little sterile, actually. It's got energy and it's very tight and everything, but something's missing.

I'll try to write a more detailed review in the next few days.
