Single Focus: Mina Agossi - Well You Needn't

Mina Agossi - Well You Needn't (Monk) from the album of the same name.

Short, fun, acoustic-with-a-few-filters voice-bass-drums hip hop influenced take.

Nice one!
Good work, fresh ideas. It reminded me the in a Hip Hop way the groovy Leon Parker version of Monk's "Bemsha Swing" in his Above & Below (1994)

You did.
Yesterday I listened to Agossi's 2001 cd "E-Z Pass To Brooklyn" all the way, then I ordered this too.

Rough, often dry, personal and very rhythmic, she's quite a voice, imho.

Heard this French/Beninin singer at London Jazz Festival last Nov, first trio, then with Archie Shepp's band. Talented singer. It's hard, though, to do long shows with just bass and drums, especially when the bass player plays walking bass or ostinatos only. I believe a more flexible bassplayer would add to her group, some arco, some inventive use of electronics etc. Or maybe adding a pianist - or a horn - for variation in soundscape and arrangements.

But, as I said, she's got a lot of talent and some stage precense, and is definitley worth a listen.

Mwanji, my trademark lyricism would need a more fluent english to be expressed on jazzcorner ; well, I admit my judgement toward pretty Mina Agossi is a bit unfair, because she has talent indeed. Or is it just her talent that makes me think she could avoid doing ridiculous songs like that ?

May I come to know through your fluent dialectic why -in this only peculiar song?- she sounds so "ridiculous" or wether is the Monk's tune so sad to you?
She recites the Mike Ferro lyrics in a quite personal, expressive and rhythmic way, all the arrangement works around her speech's effective swing...
Any other better version to advise I'd better know?
