Rolf Lislevand - Nuove Musiche -- What do you know about this, Sand?
 ECM NEW SERIES
Greetings ECM Fans!
Just a quick email to let you know about the ECM debut of Norwegian master lutenist Rolf Lislevand, Nuove Musiche. Truly an album that could only come from ECM, Nuove Musiche features music from early baroque sources, adapted and arranged by Rolf Lislevand. Both imaginative and stylistically assured, these highly enjoyable renderings display the astonishing virtuosity of Lislevand's ensemble, and create fascinating allusions to Spanish Flamenco, Irish Folk and many other idioms. The group of musicians on the album includes the mesmerizing Arianna Savall and Pedro Estevan, and as you can see below, there is quite a unique instrumentation.
Best wishes,
ECM Records NY

Nothing like white-on-white type for readability.
oh well, I guess it's better than white-on-white crime.
Looked like a harp guitar; Michael Hedges used to play one. Looks like an interesting release.

Rolf Lislevand is a great vihuela and lute player. I'm not exactly an authority on early music, but I really enjoyed his recording of the Bach lute suites, that was released a few years back. I haven't heard his ensemble at all, but I'm sure that it's good stuff. Personally I'm kind of sceptic to composers rewriting old material, the only one that I actually like is Benjamin Britten's Nocturnal after John Dowland, which I find very haunting. That may be due to my classical guitar studying days, which are long gone now.
Edit: Damn, I should've re-read the original post, it seems like more of an improvisational group effort, than an album of modern versions of old themes. It's probably good.

As Kyrre said, Rolf Lislevand is one to check out. His knowledge about "Early Music" and his attidude to dealing with this music stands out. Remarkable. He played some jazz guitar before he picked up the lute
The ECM release looks interesting, I thought. A reviewer in the daily i picked up a few minutes later said that I should rather pick up one of his earlier releases.
I respect that reviewer and I haven't heard this recording...

It's not that difficult to read Pete's posting, if you really what to read it.
Anyway, it's just a quote, but, yeah, the recording is good.

thanks to Pete for bringing this to my attention: my last ECM catalogue expired circa 04 and such is the, ahem, unhelpful character of the too-flashy ECM website that this very-interesting-sounding date flew under my radar, along with a few others I mean to catch up on. I managed to find a date led by viol-player Jordi Savall on which RL and others from this ECM date play circa 1998, pre-Baroque music from Spain & Portugal with improv room, very nice. I can certainly imagine Herr Eicher getting excited by the possibilities (see also The Dowland Project).
