Bad Names

I read in yesterday's Wa Post that Sen. George Allen's chief of staff is a fellow called Dick Wadhams. That's a bad name. It's a rule so obvious that it probably has never been articulated: if your last name carries the syllable "wad," go by Richard.

I work with a woman in Grand Junction, CO by the name of Mary Cockshoot. But I happen to think her name is wonderful.

Dick Trickle would likely be the alltime classic.

I remember when there was a major league baseball player (Tigers, I think) named Rusty Kuntz. He should have formed a partnership with Ray Oyler.

There's a lawyer in DC named Cantwell Muckenfuss. I once knew a lawyer who defended sexual harassment cases named Al Feliu (his associate was Liz Fealey).

I know a bandleader named Glasscock. Like....why? Why keep a name like that?

And there is a Chinese restaurant down the street from me named - "Young Dong".

A foreign girl at the junior high where my mom works had to have her parents brought in to gently explain that the girl's name, pronounced "Prickshit," wouldn't fly 'round these parts.

Reminds one of the name Levitt mentioned in Freakanomics.

Pronounced Shiteed, but spelled Shithead.

funny thread.

in terms of getting through airport security quickly, I'm guessing that Jihad Muhammad, a current University of Cincinnati basketball player, doesn't have the best of luck.

Back in my early school days - when it was still A-OK to have a gay old time - others kids used to run the first letter of my first name together with my last name.

I once read that is some Arab countries, Charlton Heston the actor had to be billed with a different surname since in some Arabic language the word "heston" meant "shit".

Confirmation?

I once represented a client named John Motor in an auto accident lawsuit. The defendant who rear-ended him was a Korean gentleman named Sumi.

Went to Band Camp for four summers with a guy named Bill Outhouse. Ran into him again Senior year of College when we both stood up for the same wedding, and he had changed his name to Bill Johns..... no kidding!

and... in the Springfield Illinois area (where my Mother came from) there's a whole dynasty of "Funderburks." I was always glad that wasn't MY name.....

If you're going to be in politics, a name can be a problem. And I'm not just talking about patently goofy names like Dick Wadhams. Consider the guy who since 2000 has been involved in so many Democratic campaigns, Matt Gobush. Normally that name wouldn't stand out. But it's a wrong name for a Democrat operative. Gobush!

Yes, that's his son.

There's a sportswriter I know who goes by Michael Hunt for obvious reasons.

In a theater building where I've done several plays, there was a sign up for a gay-themed evening of theater.

One of the playwrights was:

Jan Buttram.
