He has also recorded with Tom Harrell, Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Steven Bernstein, Roy Campbell, and Mat Maneri.

The Claudia Quintet is one of the most innovative and promising groups to emerge in recent years from 'downtown' NY's new alt-jazz scene. The group has released 2 CDs, “The Claudia Quintet” in 2002 followed by “I, Claudia” which was released last year. They have toured extensively, receiving widespread critical acclaim and generating a buzz among both jazz and post-rock audiences in the US, Europe, Australia and beyond. Simultaneously accessible and intriguing, the Claudia Quintet's music can perhaps best be described as post-jazz: combining propulsive grooves, sophisticated compositions and near-telepathic improvisation. Both of their releases have received critical acclaim, including four stars from DownBeat magazine, “Best of 2002" by Jazztimes and a “CHOC” from Jazzman. Their new CD, Semi-Formal was released on Cuneiform in October 2005.

Ars Nova Workshop and International House Philadelphia present:
Friday, March 17 | 8pm
HENRY THREADGILL'S ZOOID
with Henry Threadgill, alto saxophone/flute/bass flute; Liberty Ellman, acoustic guitar; Rubin Kodheli, cello; Dana Leong, cello; Jose Davila, tuba; and Elliot Humberto Kavee, drums

International House Philadelphia, 3701 Chestnut Street
$20 General Admission; $15 Senior Citizens/IHouse Members; $10 Students with valid ID

Henry Threadgill’s Zooid (a “zooid” is an organic cell capable of independent movement or several cells forming a colony) creates some of today’s most peculiar and adventurous music. With bizarre instrumentation and voicings, Threadgill’s compositions are visceral and compelling, and incorporate his experiences with gospel, blues, world and marching band music. Residing at the forefront of creative music for the past quarter of a century, Threadgill received the ‘Best Composer’ honors in Downbeat Magazine’s International Jazz Critic's Poll in 1991, 1990, 1989 and 1988, when he placed in 11 categories and had two albums nominated as ‘Record of the Year’. His late-70s ensemble “Air” (with Fred Hopkins and Steve McCall) is one of the AACMs most legendary collectives.

The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut Street | Philadelphia

Philadelphia native guitarist Jon Madof has collaborated with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Frank London, Daniel Carter, and many others on the New York music scene. With his 'Jewish power trio' Rashanim, he has recorded extensively for John Zorn’s Tzadik Records label, including a self-titled debut CD in 2003, a recording of John Zorn's compositions (Masada Rock, 2005) and several compilations. He has composed music for film, dance, and theater, including a collaboration in 2003 with the NYC movement theater company Collision Theory. He performs regularly in New York City at venues including Tonic, the Knitting Factory, Makor, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Rashanim is a trio of guitar, bass and drums/percussion drawing on influences including Jewish melodies, indie rock, punk, and jazz. The 'Jewish power trio' is led by guitarist Jon Madof, who has worked with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Frank London and many others. Shanir Blumenkranz (Satlah, Pharaoh's Daughter) is on bass, and Mathias Kunzli (Lauren Hill) plays drums and percussion. The band gets its name from the noisemakers used during the Jewish holiday of Purim.
