Summer jazz education and performance on the campus of Stanford University

STANFORD, CA—Each summer for more than three decades Stanford Jazz Workshop (SJW) has created a lively and supportive community of jazz artists, educators, students, and enthusiasts on the campus of Stanford University. SJW’s programs provide an exceptional immersion in jazz, fostering a deeper appreciation of this great improvisational music genre, hailed by many as "the definitive American art form."

Stanford Jazz Workshop's 35th Season will be presented June 24 through August 5. Events will include the Stanford Jazz Festival; the Jazz Camp for students aged 12 to 17; the Jazz Residency for adults and advanced youth; and the Evening Summer class series for students 12 and older. All events will be presented at Stanford's Braun Music Center and Dinkelspiel Auditorium. Founded in 1972, the Stanford Jazz Workshop (SJW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to jazz education and appreciation.

Featured performers and instructors for the 2006 Stanford Jazz Workshop will include saxophonists Phil Woods, Jimmy Heath, Eric Alexander, Tia Fuller, and Andrew Speight; trumpeters Marcus Belgrave and Brian Lynch; guitarist Peter Bernstein; violinist Regina Carter; pianists Cedar Walton, Larry Goldings, Randy Porter, Harold Mabern, and Rob Schneiderman; bassists Rodney Whitaker and Michael Zisman; drummers Albert "Tootie" Heath, Bill Stewart, and Ndugu Chancler; and vocalists Madeline Eastman and Dena DeRose. Jazz Camp (Students ages 12-17)
Week One: July 16–21, 2006
Week Two: July 23–28, 2006

SJW's Jazz Camp creates a fun, focused, and supportive environment for younger musicians, performing at beginning to advanced levels. Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists, Jazz Camp provides an opportunity to study and play with other young players and a prestigious faculty of professional musicians and top educators.

The Jazz Camp curriculum emphasizes ear-training, improvisation, and playing in small combos. Students are evaluated and placed into classes and combos with other musicians at their level. The Jazz Camp experience includes masterclasses, small ensemble playing, private lessons, and performance opportunities, as well as theory, musicianship, and jazz history instruction. Each week of Jazz Camp culminates in a festive public recital by student combos. Financial-need scholarship assistance is available.

Jazz Residency (Adults, under 18 by audition)
July 30–August 4, 2006

SJW's Jazz Residency is a rewarding and enjoyable week-long immersion in jazz designed for adult musicians, emerging professionals, and music educators. Participants interact closely with a renowned faculty of jazz legends, acclaimed professional players, top jazz educators, and a community of motivated peers. The Jazz Residency curriculum includes daily masterclasses, lectures, combo sessions, informal jam sessions, and special events. Financial-need scholarship assistance is available.

Stanford Jazz Festival
June 24–August 5, 2006

The talented faculty of SJW’s summer education programs provides the foundation for our annual summer Stanford Jazz Festival, presented in conjunction with the Jazz Camp and Jazz Residency. Now attracting more than 17,000 enthusiasts each summer, the Stanford Jazz Festival features evening concerts, free noontime performances, late-night jam sessions, and special events for children and families. The Stanford Jazz Festival is distinguished by a tradition of presenting innovative combinations of diverse jazz legends and emerging talents. All Stanford Jazz Festival events are open to the public.

Evening Summer Classes
June 14–July 12, 2006

The Evening Summer program offers musicians ages 12 and older a chance to develop their skills in a five-week series of classes held on Wednesday evenings. Classes are taught by some of the Bay Area’s top jazz artists and educators.

Registration/Tickets

Registration is open for Stanford Jazz Workshop's Jazz Camp and Jazz Residency. Registration for 2006 Evening Summer classes will open March 27. Tickets for the 2006 Stanford Jazz Festival will go on sale May 1, 2006.
