Storm-victims fund-raiser to feature jazz - Cleveland
Jazz groups will perform next week at a concert to aid survivors of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It will start at 5 p.m. next Sunday, March 26, at Antioch Baptist Church, 8869 Cedar Ave.
One of the groups is Gabriel's Horns, a big band that first got together for a Christmas show at the Salvation Army Miles Park Center six years ago.
Trumpeter Joe DeJarnette will head a quintet. Bassist Cedric Napoleon and his trio are on the program as well.
William Woods, Antioch's music director, who retired from teaching at the Cleveland School of the Arts but is still working with students there, will present the Jazz Art Ensemble from the school.
They will be accompanied by pianist Lafayette Carthon, who is back in town after working with leading national singers and bands.
The program will include survivors staying in Cleveland who will talk about how the hurricanes continue to affect their lives.
Gladys Harrison, who chairs the event committee, said a minimum donation of $10 is requested. For tickets, call 216-421-1516 or 216-663-7622.
