Vanessa Rubin will perform with her trio at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music on
Saturday, April 8, 2006 at 8:00 p.m.,as part of the Conservatory's popular
Jazz at the Conservatory series. The evening will feature performances of songs from the
Great American Songbook, as well as originals. Tickets are $25; $15 for student/seniors and are available now by calling the Conservatory at 718-622-3300.
Vanessa Rubin was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio to parents from Trinidad and Louisiana. After achieving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Ohio State University, Vanessa taught for a number of years, and continued to hone her skills by performing in local venues. After her arrival in New York City in 1982, Rubin was quickly accepted by jazz veterans. She studied with Barry Harris and Frank Foster at Harris' Jazz Cultural Theater. Since that time she has worked with an impressive list of musicians including Kenny Barron, Pharoah Sanders, Lionel Hampton, the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, Cecil Bridgewater, Etta Jones, Toots Thieleman, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., and James Williams. More recently she has completed international tours with Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.
With locations in Brooklyn and Queens, the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit community schools of the arts in the nation. The Conservatory provides music instruction for everyone, from the 18-month-old child to the 90-year-old senior and is dedicated to remaining affordable and accessible to the diverse communities it serves.
