Cool Peter Cincotti - the next big thing?

Just curious--how many of you actually agree with all the hype surrounding 19 year old jazz "phenom" Peter Cincotti? I've heard everything from "he's just that kid who always wears a suit" to "the next jazz legend" to "next year's Norah Jones." I've heard some of his stuff and you have to admit that this guy is talented but, honestly, are people going to take this guy seriously?

I'm going to see him this August when he comes to Columbus, OH's Promowest Pavilion when he opens for kd lang. So hopefully, you all will be able to help me out when I decide whether or not I should show up on time and claim my spot on the lawn to see Peter or bide my time and chill before kd hits the stage.

NO!

I've heard the entire Concord CD with the big push behind it. He plays what sounds like a pretty decent piano styles from previous times like stride, but to my ears when he opens his mouth, it's ALL OVER...

Had he been touted as the 'bright young man who plays piano', would not be much of a reach if you like that type of thing.

On the other hand if the buzz is about 'the bright, handsome young man who can play piano AND sing'....................NOT!

If you enjoy Harry Connick, Jr, then you will also enjoy Peter Cincotti.

Exactly, Sumo! He has a pleasant enough sound, but the cat is certainly no Mark Murphy. As stated by Mike earlier, his primary talent appears to be tickling those ivories.

More hype, just like Norah Jones.

Both are absolutely mediocre, and would put any serious listener to sleep.

Bye-ya.

Soooo, maddiemae, you say young Peter is opening for kd lang this coming August at the Promowest Pavillion in Columbus Ohio?

What, no '800' number as to where one might order tickets should one be interested? No other details of the tour to impart?

Welcome to the JC.

I look forward with great anticipation to your post number two. (I'm guessing that you'll thrash about like a wounded bird.)

I saw Peter Cincotti perform about a month or so ago and was very impressed. He has a strong voice, writes good tunes and is a very good pianist. His music may not be considered challenging jazz yet, but I was impressed by his musicianship, the pacing of his performance, and the fact that as an encore he played a very credible version of Fats Waller's "Handful Of Keys." His live performance was way ahead of his decent but not earthshattering recording.

Norah Jones on the other hand is a mediocrity who has nothing to do with jazz, so that comparison is nonsensical.

Chaney, on the evidence, that was a poor guess and an ill-mannered response.

Cincotti is a retro lounge act. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I haven't heard Peter Cincotti yet. I've seen the press but haven't heard any of his CD yet. I have so many other things to listen to and to do that I didn't go running out to buy it ASAP as a good little jazz consumer should.

I also haven't heard him on the radio, but quite frankly, I haven't been listening to the radio as much as usual.

Scott Yanow's comments make me more interested in him. I don't know if I'll run out and buy the disc, but I'll bet you anything that a few of my students will have bought it when they come back to school next semester. I think I'll let them hip me to it. If I like it, I'll buy my own.

The comparison with Norah is in fact apt: both are attractive young people with a modicum of talent who are hyped by record labels and presented as something fabulous and cool (I believe a Cincotti advertisement refers to "the re-birth of the cool").

So talk to me about Cincotti in 20 years when--and if--he's suffered a bit (he's an upper east side yuppy, so that's unlikely) and has grown some balls. If he's still around, I'll be surprised. Dean Martin had more nuts--and more sheer talent--when he was the same age than this kid is likely to have when he's 50. Unless you have every Sinatra, Martin and Crosby record available, there's no reason to waste coin on this guy. And if you did have all their records, you surely wouldn't want to.

More retro hash. Uggghh.

Bye-ya.

Goodness...so much drama. Thank you to those who offered your opinions. I'm just getting into jazz and could use all the help I can in getting to know the territory. As to the root of my interest in Peter, I have a friend who goes to Columbia who told me about him--simple as that. As for my reference to the venue that I was going to see the show, I think Chaney is reading a bit too much into it. I meant nothing by it. Next time I guess I'll bite my tongue and be as vague as possible if that's the way people are going to be. You know, jazz crowds already have the reputation of being elitist and/or clique-y. Again, thank you again for those of you who were civil and helped to dispell the stereotype and shame on Chaney for reinforcing it.

Thanks for the reality check, maddiemae. And I would like to echo the sentiments about Chaney's rudeness.

I caught a few seconds of him on BET Jazz in the last few days and thought he was okay but didn't hear enough to have a strong opinion one way or the other. If you have the ticket, I recommend you check him out since you are going to be there anyway. Check back and let us know how it went.

Sorry folks. Pardon my rudeness. My mistake to have wandered into a soft jazz thread.

I'll just slooooowly back toward the door and leave you to discuss all things Cincotti.

Enjoy.

I'm not sure what in hell a smooth thread has to do with you acting like an ass. I am really sick of the way some posters here treat new people.

I believe the initial rudeness was due to this post smelling like some sort of hype by a promoter. It happens on the net all the time and usually includes reference to a live performance and lots of words in quotes like phenom or legend.

The guy's mom is his lyricist, which gives some of those tunes some pretty twisted implications. If you want to go there. Not that I do. Not necessarily...

Hey - as long as Buddy Greco is still around, we're not taking applications, ok? (put a grin here)

You have made a total of 7 posts at JC. Only three have been in Speakout, two on this thread. I can only conclude that you are a jerk, unlike maddiemae, who is polite, pleasant, and curious. You owe her a real, non-snide, apology.

re Cincotti, I had never even heard of him before this thread. Unlike Paul B, I have no opinion about the size or quantity of his testicles.

Maddiemae -

Please don't let one bad apple chase you out of the orchard or change your posting habits. There's no excuse for that kind of nastiness here.

I just saw Cincotti in Montreal. Those who are inclined to like him will find much to enjoy about his singing and his playing. Those who aren't will not. And he's a pretty relaxed performer, particularly for one so young. My suggestion would be to show up early and see him. Let us know what you think, will you? And if you like him, you might want to check out Michel Buble. You can hear Buble on his site. He's another young male singer people are going to love to hate when he gets even more famous. You can say you knew (about) him when.
