Franck Nicolas is a trumpeter from Guadeloupe. The album "Jazz Ka Philosophy 2: Papillon Ka" is his fusion of jazz and gwo-ka. The version of the song presented here is the stripped down one, so you can really hear the intricate polyrhythms of the two ka (hand drum) players. The full versions (both versions of every track are on the album) also have bass.
It may be my French Caribbean roots speaking, but I really find this blend succesful and a much truer blend than, say, David Murray's efforts in this area.
