Spirit (the band)
Anybody fans of this 60's group?
I haven't listened to them in a long time, but dragged my LPs out this weekend when I heard the new theme song for the Charlie's Angels flick. It's a tune by Pink featuring William Orbit that samples and riffs on "Fresh Garbage". Blew me away when I heard it.
Anyway, they had a unique sound with lots of jazz influences. My favorites would be their self-titled first album and "12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus". A wealth of great tunes with some jazzy psychedelica thrown in.

Nope.
But my daughter loves the soundtrack from the cartoon/movie Spirit.
Does that count...?

Very fine, very underrated group. I have a couple of their late 60s lps collecting mildew in the outside shed. "The Family That Plays Together": Father-son combo in the group, and the dad, who played drums, had played with Monk, Mulligan... Not your average garage band.

Saw, 'em, loved 'em. To my 12 year old ears, they were the first rock band to integrate so MUCH jazz into their music. John Loke on keyboards, Mark Andes on bass, Jay Ferguson on vocals, dad Ed Cassady on drums (a little stiff as a rocker but interesting) and his boy, Randy California on guitar.
Randy C had been an up and coming baseball player who turned down an opportunity to get into the majors so he could tour with Spirit (or so the legend goes). He was excellent live--did an unaccompanied solo with feedback but far more melodic than a Hendrix flight. California ended his solo with a series of frantic acsending arpeggios and then screaming the word "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!" As he hit the highest note. It that's not art, what is?
Sadly, he died attempting to save a drowning boy a few years after the group broke up.
Mechanical World, baby.

I like them. I got their first three albums. Very eclectic group and good songwriters.
Ed Cassidy is not Randy Californias biological dad. He got married with Randy´s mother and is his stepfather.

Good one!
Randy California supposedly "took lessons" (or at least 'hung out') with Jimi early on. It certainly influenced much of his playing.

What a coincidence! I just bought the four classic Spirit CD this past week, then saw this thread tonight for the first time. I've been searching out old instrumental tunes from the late 60s that I'm recording for a project and have been looking into the Spirit catalog for ideas starting with the CD Clear. Great stuff.

Not to change the subject or anything, but I heard this other California band on the radio yesterday and they were just KILLER:
"Seven & Seven Is," Baby!

SPIRIT and LOVE -- the two great LA bands nobody talks about becuase of that pretentious ass Jim Morrison
CLEAR SPIRIT, their thrid record, is a long-tiome favorite. Has some of California' best gittar playin' on record, IMHO.
And if you've made it all the way through POTATOLAND, well, then you're a true fan

I recently put "The Family That Plays Together" on CD, and I pull out "Twelve Dreams" a lot. Have you met my Uncle Jack? He's in the mechanical world hanging with Mr. Skin.

That Jo Jo Gunne album is easily their best. They went downhill pretty fast after that one. It's a classic though.
