Christine Jensen, the Montreal-based jazz saxophonist comes to Nanaimo this week to help raise funds for a new jazz charity, Friends of Nanaimo Jazz Society, whose aim is to help young musicians get their start.
On Thursday, April 13, the Friends launches its debut fundraising concert A Jazz Affair, and Jensen is its headline performer.
Playing alongside her will be local jazz group Decadence, various Wellington secondary school jazz combos, and Kwalikum secondary school’s Emma and the Postal Men.
A Jazz Affair takes place at Beban Park Auditorium, from 6-11 p.m., under a Manhattan City skyline theme. Tickets are $35, which includes play-for-prize casino money, and a complimentary appetizer and drink. Extra casino money will be sold during the event. As well, additional food will be available for purchase – catered by local restaurants, including Acme Food Co., Lighthouse Bistro, Amazing Thai, and Phoenecia Mediterranean. All proceeds from the event go to the Wellington Secondary Jazz Academy for new instruments, jazz clinics, scholarships and bursaries.
