"I need to feel like the walls can stretch." Miriam Parker

Is New York is ready to be reintroduced to the work of Miriam Parker?
Born and raised in Manhattan, Miriam Parker received her initial training in New York before heading off to Europe, where she resided for much of her young career. While in Europe, among other things, Ms. Parker danced for 3 years with Pretty Ugly under the direction of Amanda Miller. She also danced with the Ballet Saarbrucken as well as organizing site specific performances. Having recently returned to New York, Ms Parker is ready to emerge as the new force in the downtown dance scene.
For this performance, Parker will be joined by bassit Todd Nicholson, a significant young instrumentalist/composer in the avantJazz scene. Recently, Nicholson debuted his five movement suite Angel Island at a performance at Roulette and was featured in the emerging artists program of last year’s Vision Festival.

"...(Gale) is just about as individualistic voiced a horn player as you’ll find." - JazzTimes

In the 1960s, Sun Ra referred to Eddie Gale as "The original avant garde trumpeter." By that time, he was already one of the most prominent, having performed and recorded with Ra as well as pianist Cecil (appearing on the classic album Unit Structures). By the late ‘60s, Gale was leading his own groups and recorded two incredible Blue Note albums entitled Ghetto Music and Black Rhythm Happening. As the ‘70s dawned, Gale was one of the brightest stars in the avant garde scene. Soon after, Gale moved to California where he has resided ever since, becoming a mainstay of the West Coast avant garde movement. Last year, Gale made a rare New York appearance to perform at the 2005 Vision Festival (a set which has since been released on CD.)
This performance is part of Gale’s second New York trip in less than a year. This rare treat gives New York audiences another opportunity to hear this west coast trumpet legend. For the performance, Gale has once again brought west coast band members Valerie Mihs and T. Squire Holman, with the group augmented by New York players Todd Nicholson and Dick Griffin.
Opportunities to hear Eddie Gale are few and far between. Catch him while you can.
