Wylcliffe Gordon delivers Univ of Scranton's Grad Address
The principal address at the University of Scranton’s 2006 commencement ceremony will be, quite literally, music to the ears of all those attending.
Acclaimed jazz musician and educator Wycliffe Gordon will communicate through his music and perform the “principal address” at the ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students.
Mr. Gordon will also receive an honorary degree at the ceremony, which will begin at noon at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza, Wilkes-Barre, on May 28.
“Wycliffe Gordon is equally gifted both in musical talent and in his passion to educate and inspire others through music,” said Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., University of Scranton president. “Wycliffe will perform New Orleans jazz music at our commencement, and I can think of no better way for our community to stand in solidarity with the great city that gave birth to this entirely American art form. This promises to be among our most memorable and moving commencement ceremonies.”
The university’s jazz band and jazz combo will accompany Mr. Gordon in his performance of a number of arrangements of traditional and well-known New Orleans music.
A frequent guest artist with the University of Scranton Performance Music Ensembles, Mr. Gordon has had an extraordinary career as a performer, conductor, composer, arranger and educator.
As a solo artist and member of the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet and as a former member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, the Lincoln Jazz Orchestra and the Gully Low Jazz Band, Mr. Gordon has toured the world performing jazz for audiences of all ages.Mr. Gordon serves as a faculty member of the Institute for Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School, a position which he has held since the inception of the program in September 2001.
This is the first time in the history of the University of Scranton that a performance will be given as the principal address.
