Reynolds on Music
I disagree with our friend Mr. Reynolds quite a bit about music, but I'm starting to miss his preacher-like rants, wrongheaded as I feel some of them are. so, if you're reading this and you don't care what Steve has to say about music, open another thread.
so what have you been listening to lately, Steve?

thanks, Dennis. I'm pretty bummed I have to miss your concert here on August 9, because one of my best friends is getting married that afternoon, reception to follow.
I may be mistaken, but I believe that Steve has cut way down on his music postings ever since a certain unnamed someone jumped all over him a while back. I started this thread to hopefully resuscitate the Preacher, with all of his pros and cons intact. bring it on, Steve!

And the National Anthem at a Red Sox game is not a good answer.

I'll just tell the guys at Tonic that the reception will be at the gig! Sorry to miss you too...

That fuckin' happens all the friggin' time over here...I notice today, for example, there aren't may postings at all. My son, Aaron, who was having a grand time posting back and forth with you, decided to call it quits...he didn't want to have to wade through all the slams to get to the heart of the matter.

I survived more personal insults due to my musical thoughts for years than probably anyone - not the reason I have not been ranting lately
just taking it easy - havn't been listening as much lately - maybe a break from 10-12 years of listening to 30-40 hours a week
will be back.......
peace and blessings

Not that it really matters to me why aebly is so consistantly mistaken.

What's that Ollie? Was this planned at the last minion meeting?
The only reason I posted about it is because I felt the need to protect who ever aebly did not name in his mistake. And the 2nd post of course to answer hateman.

Uli, that's the silliest excuse I've ever heard. Do you often feel the need to protect the anonymous?

Yes, I do, bluenoter. Especially against some people's bile who I don't wanna name either.

Uli, I also have something nice to say to you: at this point in my explorations, I'm getting an inkling that my taste in post-1960s jazz (up to the present) might turn out to be very much like yours. No joke.
Edit: I'm talking about the stuff you like, not the stuff you dislike or condemn out of hand.

ok, Uli, that's four posts on this thread for you, and one on the Essential Chicago Free Jazz thread, a rare musical topic that you might actually have something positive to contribute to. thanks for sharing, as always.

Good for you, bluenoter!
I don't dislike a lot of music and I don't condemn any either. not even lowercase. If that's what people wanna do or wanna like, that's fine with me. The only thing that I condemn is the juvenile talk about it, you know talk like it's more creative or more this or that.

When I joined JC, Steve's musical rants were in full flower. Every week was a new greatest band ever, most life-altering saxophone solo, most revolutionary composition ever played ... I never thought of it as hyperbole, just the wild squeals of an incredibly enthusiastic fan.
Steve was directly responsible for my discovering Michael Moore and the Clusone 3, Billy Bang, Leimgruber/Leandre/Hauser, Trovesi and the Italians, Dave Douglas and many others that have remained favorites. So if he's ranting, I'm listening.

As a previous lurker on the old board, I too miss his rants/raves. I can relate to that sort of passionate effusiveness.
I also got a kick out of old "Rack 'em DEEP" so maybe my opinion matters little.

Yeah, Stevie Rey, what's up? We drop big dollah on a new computer just so's we can get back online, and you disappear. Come on, man! Life is short. Art is long. Come on back. I need a fix of some Reynolds rap.

I'm pretty newbie here, so perhaps it's not my place to say, but it seems to me that passionate disagreements and substantiated discussions are what make a board interesting to read and particpate in.

Jon, you've done a great service to the board by posting your appeal. Like Stonemonkts, I'm only recently a former lurker and Steve's dispatches have been a main motivator for me to get more involved. (That's right, I'm talking to you, big guy.) I even addressed him in my last message, my first record review posted on the site.
OK, I've said enough, the tears are making it hard for to read these words, the foolish musings of my broken heart. My coworkers also are starting to look concerned.

Dennis, you should know that "lowercase" is not the orthodox term for any kind of music; Uli uses it because he thinks it is the silliest term for a genre and so he can make the genre or more importantly those who like it silly by using it. His incessant use of the term makes something or someone silly, that's for sure.
(And Uli -- you'll get no reply to any response to this posting from me.)

there's very little overlap between the "lowercase" crew and the music falling under the eai umbrella: the main difference is that the lowercase musicians are typically about painstaking composition, led by Bernhard Günter, and very rarely about improvising (there was a hilarious post on the lowercase list years ago by one of the primary composers in which he repeatedly slammed John "Coletrane"). if you're interested in investigating, the mailing list that coined the term is housed here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lowercase-sound
more to the point, as Jonathan said, Uli has absolutely no interest in knowing anything about the actual music that his term refers to, and has heard virtually none of the music discussed, in either genre. he's just a cranky, bile-filled old man, seemingly with very little positive to add.
rant on, Reynolds!

OK...understood. Thanks to all.
Reynolds is the first to start raving about my music on this board. Of course, he was right to go on and on about it! : )

Steven's rants are enjoyable, but only if The Lil, the good Doctor, or a certain mister D'Imperio are around to give him a good drubbing in return.
Otherwise, it's all rather one sided, and we have nothing but Uli's rather creepy obsession with John Abbley to entertain us.
Well that, and Cherche's annoying habit of letting everyone know what brand of corn flake he had this morning and then posting a JPEG of the box.
