Dewey Redman Recommendations?
What are your favorite Dewey Redman recordings?
I'm seeing him next weekend as part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival, just wanted to bone up a bit.
Seems to me his work as a leader (Living on the Edge, The Ear of the Behearer) doesn't quite live up to his work as a sideman (80/81, Old & New Dreams, New York is Now/Love Call). More than happy to be shown otherwise.

Another favorite date as sideman is on this Matt Wilson album, where you can hear Dewey do the ultimate jazz rendition of "Sweet Betsy From Pike"!

It's probably out of print, but there was a great ECM album from 1982 or 83 called "The Struggle Continues," with Charles Eubanks (piano), Mark Helias and Ed Blackwell. I think that might be my favorite.

I put in a vote for Tarik, the album on Actuel or BYG or whatever that French label was that had the white covers that everything has been reissued from in the last few years.

The label was BYG and the series was Actuel (I believe there was some connection with a magazine of the same name). I'm mad about that album too. Great trio with Malachi Favors & Ed Blackwell.
He wasn't really a sideman in Old & New Dreams--it was a cooperative group. Overall I prefer the Black Saints to the ECMs.

I'm with Rene on this.
The thing is I picked this up for $1.20 yesterday at a garage sale and LOVE it!!! It a real treat to the ears to hear Dewey Redman playing like that.

Look for the Black Star is a nice mid-60s date too, not too hard to find on vinyl.

I had Living on the Edge, but didn't keep it.
I thought Ear of the Behearer was quite good, though.
Tarik is probably my favorite. The Struggle Continues is great also.

That’s my favorite Dewey, my copy is on VARESE Records;oddly no catalog number. The cover has " Actuel 5" on it. I purchased this in Dijon. Indeed a great trio.
Other favorites:
AFRICAN VENUS (EVIDENCE 22093)
4TET ORNETTE TRIB. (MUSIC AND ARTS 938)
SCHOOL WORK (MONS 1900)

This is a monster record, a duet of Redman with Ed Blackwell live in Willisau, hard to find, though... It's probably my favorite Redman along with "Ear of the Behearer" on Impulse.

. . .just skip the sopranino cuts! Dewey, in the few chances I know of one can hear him in the context, is an absolute killer of a tenor/drums duo player. "Willisee" and "Communication" are personal highlights.
And Cadence has it for fifteen clams, Gerardo!

I love "Living on the Edge". I mentioned this album to Mr. Redman once and he told me it was one of his favorites.

I disagree with this. 'Ear of the Behearer' is a gem.

Going back and listening to it again, you're right...that is a cooking session, I love the cello/bass combo.
Thanks, everyone for the suggestions. I picked this up on eBay:
Some serious blowing for sure!
If anyone's interested, they have Momentum Space at Wal-Mart.com, of all places...only $14.
The show last Sunday was fantastic...a little bit of everything, just like I expected from Dewey. Some standards, some gut-bucket blues numbers, some free-blowing, a funky middle eastern/African-type jam on the musette, with that cool scat/chanting (scanting?) thing he does. Killer band, too: Frank Kimbrough on piano and two guys from the Twin Cities area: Phil Hey on drums and Gordon Johnson on bass.
Anybody ever heard In London?

It's hard to tell who's playing when on first listen, but overall it's an unexceptional date. I have no idea why Dewey plays alto on this.

I love him in Jarrett's Quartet with Haden and Motian - most of their recordings were on Impulse!, with a couple on ECM and a couple on Atlantic.
on Impulse!:
Shades
Backhand
Fort Yawuh
Treasure Island
Mysteries
Bop-Be
Byablue
on ECM:
Survivors Suite
Eyes of the Heart
on Atlantic:
El Juicio
My favorites: Shades and Mysteries (Impulse!) and Survivors Suite (ECM). Dewey sounds great on all of them.

I've heard most of the sides listed by Frank Kimbrough and heartily concur that they're worthy.
I've always especially dug Bop-Be, Byablue and Fort Yawuh among those listed. Survivors Suite is something special, too.

Redman is playing here, for free, on the 24th.
I will try to remember to say something about it.
I caught him several times in the mid-80's [Old & New Dreams and leading a quartet], a strong musician with a very personal sound. I love his playing on Science Fiction, as well as several of the Jarrett quartet dates already cited [Fort Yawuh, Mysteries].

I have "In London". Matt Wilson turned me onto it. He's on it, I believe. I haven't listened to it for a long time, I should get that out!

I remember getting a promo copy of "In London" as a college DJ and liking it so much that I bought myself a copy. Matt Wilson is on that. I'll have to dig mine out as well as give it a spin.
