"What Wynton doesn't know"

This from the latest edition of JazzWeek.....

NEW YORK – Jazz at Lincoln Center has expanded its adult education series
under a new banner, Swing University (Swing U). Swing U’s Fall, Winter and Spring Terms feature an array of comprehensive and special interest classes, giving the public access to jazz education in a hip environment, with quality comparable to that found at leading academic institutions.

Led by Jazz at Lincoln Center’s curator, the popular Phil Schaap, Swing U’s faculty will also include legendary pianist and jazz educator Dick Katz and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra trombonist Vincent Gardner. In the fall semester, students can learn the basics in Jazz 101, take a more advanced course with Jazz 201 or learn specifics with New Orleans & Jazz or Bebop with Vincent Gardner.

In a distinctive new offering, Phil Schaap will lead a 4-session seminar,
“Learn What Wynton Doesn’t Know” focusing on subjects chosen by Jazz
at Lincoln Center’s Artistic Director, Wynton Marsalis. “Learn What Wynton Doesn’t Know” will explore special topics Marsalis has requested Schaap to teach him as a student. These unique seminars will educate both students and Marsalis in an intimate setting, the Nesuhi Ertegun Jazz
Hall of Fame. The series of classes offered by Swing U will show students what jazz is all about; Schaap explained: “Jazz sounded wonderful to me when I was a toddler. But the best thing is that it sounds even better to me today: a lifetime of listening has proven its own reward.”
Schaap added, “I want to help you better enjoy the jazz you listen to. I’ll
pass on the lessons I’ve learned first hand from the masters: Louis Arm-
strong, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Papa Jo Jones, and Max Roach. I’ll
give you the skills that will enrich your own jazz experience, not to teach
you trumpet or piano or drums but to teach you the history, the context, the culture, while telling you some good stories.” JW

Wynton probably doesn't know about 32 seconds of uncovered barely audibile (probably) Bird warming up on solo alto ikn Bb in the home of Joe Maini at 10:45 PM on June 14, 1950. Schaap will follow it up on a forthcoming newly discovered Bird CD with a trademark 15-second "pause track" that will give time for the proper contemplation and interpretation of the passage.

Where is our little nasal wynton-man? I haven't seen him post in a long time. Of course we haven't had a good wynton brall in a while either.

Wynton obviously doesn't know how to hire a teacher who knows how to listen.

You also forgot the part where Schaap blathers on for an hour and a half, but maybe that's just on his radio shows.

Slightly off topid - I had the local jazz radio station on the other evening and I was listening o what seemed like a live broadcast from "Swing U" and the LCJO was playing some Kenton number, then took an intermission and were coming back with a program of Gerald Wilson arrangements.

Live? New? Weekly?

yeah, Phil Schaap has managed to make a show about Bird, which should be wonderful for anyone who likes jazz, more boring than watching paint dry.

What is it about Phil Schaap that brings out the worst in people? You'd think the guy was public enemy number one by the way he's treated over the internet.

Yeah, I know he can be somewhat tedious and pedantic at times. He's also been accused of being a fraud in terms of his purported knowledge of Charlie Parker, and jazz in general. I've heard all of that before.

Why the personal hatred?

Because constantly bitch-slapping the likes of you on this board has become - as an earlier poster put it - a tedious bore. Besides, Cecil Taylor and Joe Zawinul are set to play at JALC ... game over.

JALC has moved on, and yet many of you are still stuck in the same silly place.

Cheers,

Rob

Eh, this doesn't sound that bad conceptually. I've never heard Phil Schaap's voice, though.

Bye-ya
The beatings you take are strictly on you, dude. And you've even admitted on the record to the effectiveness of my arguments. Do me a favor and get your denials straight for once. Jeeezzzz!!!!!

But like I said, Cecil Taylor and Joe are at the LC this fall. And along with Steve Lacy having been there, too ...

You, sir, are dead!!!!

Cheers,

Rob

I think the continuous Wynton debates are full of hot air. I really don't think anyone cares about Wynton. But many of us do care about anonymous arguments over the internet.

I guess virtual reality fisticuffs over a non-existent argument serve as entertainment for some of us, in the past me included. But not anymore.

It's no better than watching bad TV, which I gave up years ago.

Rob, fight the good fight my man, you're on your own.

I don't believe I said anything about the man personally, I was only talking about his radio show, which is tedious and pedantic, in other words boring. I think he only turns people away from Bird, if people are looking to hear Bird that doesn't mean they also want to hear a half hour lecture about Bird between every song too.

what do you mean he can't listen? He's listening all the time. Just the other day he found a second's worth of tape where Bird was caught tightening his reed.

He (Shapp) IS tedious and pedantic (and obsessive) but I find it kind of entertaining. But in the way that slowing down to look at a car wreck is entertaining.

I do get sick of the Wyntonian use of the word "swing" as a mark of authenticity. I feel the same way when I hear the words "freedom", "faith" and "market economy".

How about "swing-based initiatives"?

How about "environmentally friendly" music?

I've never heard of Phil Schaap. It's just as well, I know I don't like him, probably.

Ha ha!

Just like pigeons to break crumbs. They seem not to be about, ya throw out the bait, and there they are.

I am not stuck anywhere Rob, cause I couldn't give a shit about the topic, I just knew, because of the thread topic, you would pop up your predictable head.
