THIS JUST IN Toronto Jazz fest to host more than 350 shows
Toronto -- This summer's TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival schedule was announced yesterday, and promises to spread over 350 shows across 10 days and 12 nights in downtown Toronto.
With performers ranging from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to turntablist DJ Logic, the festival -- which kicks off with previews June 21 and 22 before its official start on June 23 --promises to represent every possible definition of jazz. Among the less obvious choices are rap veterans De La Soul on June 23, the Jewish-schooled free improvisation of John Zorn Acoustic Masada on June 28, and samba soul singer Seu Jorge on June 30.
Still, there should be more than enough to please jazz traditionalists. Among the likely highlights are performances by two former John Coltrane sidemen. Pianist McCoy Tyner leads his septet on June 29 at Nathan Phillips Square, while Pharoah Sanders will be joined by fellow saxophonist Kenny Garret playing the same stage the following night.
Bass enthusiasts get a unique double bill June 24, when electric bassist (and former Miles Davis producer) Marcus Miller opens for the Mingus Big Band (also at Nathan Phillips). To close the festival, pianist Dave Brubeck will bring his quartet to Massey Hall on July 3.
