Buffalo Jazz Clubs?

I occasionally drive up to Buffalo to visit my kids and have always wondered if there is any jazz activity there. I have heard of some at the Anchor Bar and there is supposed to be something called The Buffalo Colored Musicians Club. Does anyone know anything about these and other spots?

Hi Dave
I think the Anchor Bar still has music. I don't know about the musicians club? There is a weekly jam session on Tuesdays at Bobby McGee's led by drummer Dan Hull. I think that club is in Amherst? Buffalo is kind of dry with venues. I used to play The Bijou across from Shea's Buffalo a lot with Bobby Militello and I played the Tralf last fall with Joshua Breakstone. I heard the Tralf has closed and The Bijou is still there but don't know about the music policy? Good luck! Mike

I'm pretty sure the Colored Musician's Club is still around -- they were hosting a larger ensemble and a jam session as well as some other things when I was in Buffalo. I never felt like going to check it out.

I think on very rare occasions there has been some jazz at Nietzsche's, but I absolutely wouldn't count on there being anything remotely close to jazz on any given night. A likelier choice for a bar might be the Rendez-Vous, on Grant St. -- they used to occasionally have younger musicians play jazz.

Some "avant-garde" (well, it would have been avant-garde in the 1960s) musicians have played at Soundlab (I think it's called), such as Peter Brotzmann, I think administered by the Hallwalls people. I don't know if they're still doing things, but they have brought a number of famous artists to town.
