Question Tubby Hayes

There is a LP by Tubby Hayes, made on one of his trips to New York, on the Fontana label called "Return Visit". The personnel are listed on the front cover, among whom there is a obviously a pseudonym by the name of "Jimmy Gloomy". This could be either Jimmy Heath, or Johnny Griffin. Anybody out there know?. There is an image on Amazon.com, where this album is for sale at an exorbitant price, as it is a Japanese import. I have re-posted this message at the suggestion of bluenoter, who also puts forward the name of James Moody as a possible identity. I hadn't thought of him, but it does seem more likely. Thanks, bluenoter.

As I pointed out to Peter, I was able to confirm that James Moody appears as "Jimmy Gloomy" on two other Tubby Hayes albums. For me, that would be confirmation enough, but I wasn't able to confirm it for the Tubby Hayes album in question, Return Visit.

Tubby Hayes

Hello Joe, do you own this album, and can you verify the source of your information?.

Peter, I've been back and forth on buying the Japanese resissue, as the vinyl is too darned spendy. I may jump anyway as Tubby vinyl is a silly fascination I have. Moody is indeed Jimmy Gloomy, but I don't have a written source for you. The All-Stars also included Rahsaan, another reason I've been wanting to hear this record. You could always email Barbara Schwarz, who has penned a discography on Hayes if you need undoubted confirmation. Hope that helps.

I have this on CD. It's still available where I bought it, http://store.acousticsounds.com/stor...7689&do=detail , although I don't remember paying this much. It is an "audiophile" gold CD so the price is a little higher because of it. Not a bad as I remember. Since I'm typing this from Manila, I can't play it to refresh my memory... only a few more days.

BTW, Moody is the tenor.

Later,
Kevin

Thanks for info, Kevin, though this looks like a different session. When you get back to USA, maybe you could let me have the recording date, if you know it.

This is the same date. Although the recording date isn't listed, the liner notes say the session took place in 1961.

Although I still haven't played it... I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open as it is... it has these tracks:
1. Afternoon In Paris (John Lewis)
2. I See With My Third "I" (Roland Kirk)
3. Lady "E" (Roland Kirk)
4. Stitt's Tune (Sonny Stitt)
5. Medley:
If I Had You (Shapiro, Campbell & Connelly)
Alone Together (Dietz & Schwartz)
For Heavens Sake (Don Meyer, Sherman Edwards & Elsie Bretton)

Players: Hayes, James Moody (in the liner notes as "Jimmy Gloomy"), Roland Kirk, Walter Bishop Jr, Sam Jones & Louis Hayes

Later,
Kevin

Barbara Schwarz' Tubby Hayes discography gives these issues: Fontana TS (STFL) 5195 / 687302TL and Smash 27026. NYC, June 23 1962. My copy is a Smash cd issued by Classic Compact discs, called "Tubby's Back in Town": SRCD 67026. The "back in town" is a reference to his first NY recordings, released as Tubby the Tenor on Epic (as well as Fontana and other labels), rec. NYC Oct 3 and 4 1961.

Definitely Moody. Nobody else sounds like that!

The Hayes/Moody ("Gloomy")/Kirk session is easily available on one disc of the Mercury Roland Kirk set Rahsaan. It's a very nice gig.
