chris a - npr's fresh air today

today's discussion with

Writer and producer Chris Albertson is considered an authority on blues singer Bessie Smith. His 1971 biography of Smith has been reissued in a new revised and expanded edition. It's called Bessie (Yale University Press) and it contains new details on Smith's early years, new interview material, and a chapter devoted to events and responses that followed the original publication

Hey Mary, you can go to the Fresh Air website (obvious url I think) and listen to the archives...just look for the archive links. National Public Radio's website may also have a link.

Just listened to it.

Nice job Chris. Now I need to buy some Bessie Smith finally, and the book.

I guess I tuned in late. I don't normally listen to much radio. Anyway, there was a woman being interviewed about her experiences as a peep-hole showgirl when I tuned in.

You weren't late, Gary. but the peep hole experience precedes my interest in Bessie Smith.

Actually, Fresh Air has put the interview on its web site, making it accessible at anyone's convenience.

Fresh Air on Bessie

Thanks to all who showed an interest. I think the book (not the interview) might well revise some JC impressions of me as a prude.

BTW Terri Gross--whose show Fresh Air is--is married to Crouch combatant Francis Davis.

You're kidding me?! Two of my favorite people to read/listen to.

And thanks for the enlightening clarification on the death of Bessie.

Chris- thanks for the posting the link. I just listened to it and thought it was an nice interview but kind of short. If were the interviewer I would've at least followed up about your revised edition additions to the book - or is that possible without giving away too much?

Any plans on an autobio?

Chris, Tuesday was our first day home from a 15 day vacation, and while driving to teach a drum lesson, I suddenly heard two familiar voices. I didn't know that you were being interviewed by Terry, but I try not to miss her show, so it was a pleasant surprise. Nice exchanges. I missed the first 5 minutes or so, but will catch that on the NPR site.

I was also unaware that Terry Gross was married to Francis Davis.

Only tangentially related to the Fresh Air interview, but here's an Australian review of the book.

Where are the typos?

I was driving around Philly last Saturday evening when I picked up an interview with Chris on NPR. I think it was a radio version of "The Blues" that ran on PBS TV. The segment happened to be about Bessie Smith................
