Eddie Henderson & Jimmy Cobb - Costa Mesa, CA

This was officially billed as, "Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents: the Music of Miles Davis with Eddie Henderson & Jimmy Cobb." Basically, a cover band-- the jazz equivalent of 'Beatlemania' --but a *great* cover band: Henderson on trumpet (complete with Harmon mute, of course) and flugelhorn; Wayne Escoffery on tenor; Steve Wilson on alto; Dave Kikoski on piano; Edward Howard on bass; and Jimmy Cobb on drums (& apostolic succession).

The tunes, not surprisingly, were almost all 1950s Miles staples-- "So What," "Bye Bye Blackbird," "Dear Old Stockholm," etc.; the only tune from the 60s was "Footprints." None of the tunes was dramatically re-arranged or reconceptualized. The solos, however, were uniformly excellent, and Jimmy Cobb, whom I had never before seen live, is still a monster on drums.
