Need Advice!

Hi Everyone,

I don't really know much about Jazz but my brother has asked for a Jazz album as a birthday gift... He sent me an email with a description of what he's looking for:

I want the kind you listen to at night, in a dark apartment and a collared shirt, sitting on a leather couch with your right arm extended over the side, holding a cool glass and a finger of scotch, watching raindrops slide down the window and smear the light of the city outside.
I'd like slow (not fast), few instruments (probably a jazz trio, maybe only one, but certainly not many), and probably string bass or soft vocals would be a real plus.

He listed a couple of example tracks that he already has:
1. Miles Davis - Blue in Green
2. Peggy Lee - Why don't you do right

A good compilation or an album or two would be great...

Please help! I'm totally lost Thanks!!

Not specially endorsing any of these, but they seem to fit the description. Masters inside, past the cheesy covers.

Maybe way too obvious, but how about "Kind of Blue"?

Those compilations came to my mind, also, but this one I can easily endorse.

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman

I think he needs a girl/boy/whatever friend more than a Jazz recording, no really.

The Johnny Hartman/John Coltrane record. It's perfect for what you want and, on top of it, it's an excellent record.

You've received some excellent recommendations. Here's another which might fit the bill.

And, some will argue with the choice below, but I feel that it's also a classic for the mood you described.

Or, sans vocals . . .

Progress. 5 Years ago that would have been Stevie's straight faced and serious response to the same question.

Doc, we're jazz fans here, not matchmakers. There are plenty of singles sites he can go to for that, while he's listening to our excellent recommendations.

If he's listening to Machine Gun for his romantic moments, I can only the imagine the singles sites he'd be searching!

Actually, today I’m listening to “More Nipples” another ‘romantic” Brotzmann classic.

I’ll tell you what, after re-reading post #1

It sounds like he’ may be looking for some “Jazz To Take Advantage of Oneself By” if you take my meaning.

Having said that; If It’s romance your after (and who’s not), this is my pick:

This CD works everytime (nudge, nudge....wink, wink)

Cool. Now I've heard of one. (To be fair, not all that many men can take more than a few minutes of it, either.)

Die Like a Dog Quartet & Ayler R.'s Nefertiti are very welcome when I play them.
Must be a French women thing.

Well, there you go! Hot women are sure to be knocking down his door when they hear him blasting "Machine Gun" in his apartment!

They'll probably just be his neighbors trying to get him to turn it down, but at least he'll be getting some female attention.

Machine Gun? Now, that’s just plain silly; everyone knows, when Peter wants “a little leg” he plays “Fuck De Boere”

Brotzmann may not be your typical romantic, but anyone who uses suggestive album titles like "Nipples" and "More Nipples" is no stranger to "titillation".
