Miles Davis - It's About That Time (NOT the Columbia CD)
I picked this up at Amazon.com, it's not the Columbia CD of the Fillmore East concert, but a recording of the Lost Quintet in Berlin in 1969. All I can say is - WOW. These guys were on fire. Telepathic. At this point they seem to have been squarely in-between the post-bop of the Hancock-Shorter-Williams group and the electric funk of the Bitches Brew sessions. Miles' mike must have been really hot or else he was right on top of it because he has a hard, almost percussive sound that I have not heard from him before. And his chops are astonishing - lightning fast "sideways" lines that span the entire range of the horn. I'm telling you, if you're a fan of this group, you HAVE to hear this. It's worth some effort to find it.
Next I'm going to try the Juan de Pins sessions.
