Miles Davis - It's About That Time (NOT the Columbia CD)

I picked this up at Amazon.com, it's not the Columbia CD of the Fillmore East concert, but a recording of the Lost Quintet in Berlin in 1969. All I can say is - WOW. These guys were on fire. Telepathic. At this point they seem to have been squarely in-between the post-bop of the Hancock-Shorter-Williams group and the electric funk of the Bitches Brew sessions. Miles' mike must have been really hot or else he was right on top of it because he has a hard, almost percussive sound that I have not heard from him before. And his chops are astonishing - lightning fast "sideways" lines that span the entire range of the horn. I'm telling you, if you're a fan of this group, you HAVE to hear this. It's worth some effort to find it.
Next I'm going to try the Juan de Pins sessions.

Don't bother. It's About that Time IS the Juan de Pins session, only mislabeled.

There do exist a lot of other live recordings of this 3rd quartet, however.

In the Miles Ahead discography, go to the 1960's and scroll down to 1969:
