Avatars
I notice that some posters have avatars and others don't. I don't see anywhere in my preferences that allow me to post an avatar. What gives?..........

Never mind. Tanager hooked me up. I'll change the annoying winking smiley when I find a more suitable avatar..........

Mone,
If we are able to have avatars, could you bump the default size to 100 px x 100 px please?
50 x 50 is a bit too small.
Thanks.

Yeah, Jim's right, what you see at your left is 50X50 pixels.........
It's been changed to 100X100.

Will avatars be restored?
Admins--
I see that our avatars have been turned off (though they're still "on file").
Maybe that's because you're working on stuff. But if it's because of a policy change, could you please let us know? And in that case, I'm respectfully requesting that you turn them on again. Thanks.

They were never supposed to be turned on, so I turned 'em off. If Lois decided to start allowing them, I'm sure she'll let me know.

Moné, Lois has a lot on her mind. Don't you think that avatars are the last thing she's thinking about?
I don't mean to rush either you or Lois, but I would like her to entertain the request that they be turned back on. Should I address that request to her and hope that she sees it, or would you please ask her?
Edit: Chris A. has started a "do you want avatars?" poll in the Alley.

Since I've never even know what an "avatar" was until very recently, I'm somewhat ambivalent about them. However, today, I added one beneath my name ... a grouping of peppercorns. Get it? They're actually too small to fully appreciate (50x50 pixels) at this scale, so I thought about adding a small photo of myself or something graphically appealing which could actually be seen.
I'm sorry to learn, that after many posters added avatars, they were arbitrarily turned off.
In the big picture, they're not very important to me, but unlike smilies, allow someone to display a bit of personality, a graphic signature of sorts, beneath their name. What's the harm?
Also, in the big picture, I would think that there are far more important issues to embrace than turning off the avatars, at least at this point in time.
My vote is for no smilies, but yes to avatars, unless they become problematic. After all, they're just a more personalized attachment, and attachments are being allowed.
Here's what I reduced (in size) as an avatar for me today.

No harm that I can see, especially since, as I pointed out in the Alley, one of the users' options is to render everybody's avatars invisible--to block their appearance.
Chris A.'s poll is scheduled to run for seven days. By then, maybe Lois will have more time to consider the matter.
Very cool peppercorns, Peppercorn Thorne!

I turned the avatars on in all forums, you can I believe turn them off in your individual settings. I also pushed the dimensions up
to 100 x 100

Thanks, Lois. I agree with Rita and Ron. Avatars are a good way to add a little more personality to posts..................................

avatars growing?
I noticed that the size of some of the avatars are increasing. 50 x 50 pixels might have been a little small but the cool thing about avatars are that they are just a small little hit for added vibe. If they get too big they kinda loose their charm. Maybe we can split the difference?
Just a thot...

Ellery, we are now able to go up to 100X100 pixels. I think that's a good size. Anything smaller tends not to show any detail. I'm finding myself squinting at the 50X50 pixel avatars. I agree that above 100X100 would probably not be a good idea................

Jimmy,
I experimented and tried a 100 x 100 pixel avatar and then tried one at about 75 or 80 pixels which I think looks nice. I agree that 50 X 50 was tiny. Not a big deal really, just wanted to make sure that we weren't making avatars into attachment files...now where's that damn smiley thing??? Well, I'm smiling as I type this...you'll just have to imagine...

I'm wondering why I can't get my cute and clever signature to be on all my posts so that I can share said cute and cleverness with all the cute and clever, and wunnerful I may add, posters of this wunnerful board.
I wish I may, I wish I might...

jazzredcat-
I'm not sure what your specific problem is, but avatars and signatures are quite different things. An avatar is a graphic image seen immediately beneath a poster's name on every post. A signature is merely text, which, when properly installed, is also visible on every post by a given poster.
I have a colorful avatar, but no "signature". Which is it that you're trying to install?

Why turn signatures off centrally, if this option can be user-defined? Let the people decide, you Nazi!

I'm amazed and somewhat disappointed that only one person has even commented on my avatar, let alone figured it out, apparently.

Ron,

Ron Thorne,
I meant to comment on your avatar, but imagining you being a private and humble person, not liking to draw a great deal of attention to yourself, I restrained my enthusiasm and impulse to throw accolades your way, until now.
Man! That's one heck of an avatar!
As for what it is. Hmmm...is it a section of kitchen tile, maybe a work of art w/rocks, marbles..?
I must say: It's much, much nicer that mone peterson's.
