Pat Metheny -- Geffen / Nonesuch remasters

Actually, there are six remasters from the vaults of the Geffen recordings available via Nonesuch. I bought five of them, except the one "We Live Here".

I'm sure that a lot of people here have an opinion for each of them. Did someone discover again a magical moments? Did one of them boring you?

Quartet [Remastered]
I never heard it until i bought it today. I listening it once and i found it good.

We Live Here [Remastered]
I didn't buy it and i'll not in the future. It's so machine, not naturel. I'm sure all the compositions are good, but in acoustic way. It's like fashion for me. One day is "in", tomorrow is "out". The final result is "out".

Still Life (Talking) [Remastered]
The first time i listening it, i didn't enjoy it. But now, i like it.

Letter From Home [Remastered]
Nostalgia! I listening it when i was living in my father's house. Good to heard it today. This is a hight-quality easy-listening record.

Road To You [Remastered]
Fantastic! I highly recomanded it!

Thanks for the info. I may pick up Still Life Talking, Letter From Home and The Road to You when I get my next paycheck (at the end of the month).

I agree that "Letter from home" is the best of those albums.

From the complete Pat Metheny Group output, the double live album "Travels" on ECM is my favourite.

It's a joke, Peter. See the Speakout thread about the Legends of Jazz tv show.

Pat and I are the same age. I saw him in Burlington on his first tour and he's tried to include Burlington in all tours since.

Anyway, if you're listen to jazz music, you have a yougn heart even if you're 52 like Pat.

I forgot to include the special edition of Song X (20th Anniversary) with Ornette Coleman. This is a masterpiece!

I wrote to the PMG's Webmaster asking him, when Question & Answer will be releasing. Here his answer:

Q&A will be out late fall, early 2007. We are also going to put out a special edition Secret Story sometime in 2007. That would cover all of them. Hope you are enjoying them.

I really do enjoy the 20th Anniversary version of Song X. I enjoy that one moreso than the 1985 version.

More reissued to comes in 2007!

I pick it up on Pat Metheny's Web Site:

Newly remastered Secret Story with 5 un-released tracks (Spring 2007);

Re-mastered Question & Answer recording re-release (Fall 2007).

Secret Story is Metheny's most technically proficient album, but it's not for all tastes. The integration of his virtuosity in an orchestral setting is remarkable.

I'd be interested to see if there are any additional tracks on the Question and Answer reissue. That's my fave Metheny, and just a gorgeous guitar album.

I would like to have an edition with bonus track. The information isn't in Pat's Website. So i don't think they will made one.

I like PM much better than the PMG. Just yesterday, someone offered me a copy of Letter From Home that she was getting rid of. I know I heard it years ago, and I decided to give it another chance. Yuck. Just really didn't like it. The two cuts I liked best are better on the live set, The Road to You.

I like just about everything he did up to about 1983, I guess; since then, I usually wait for him to do something away from the PMG, like Trio 99->00. I still dig The Way Up, though.

As Falls Wichita... is a deep, strong emotional favorite of mine.

This short news is on Pat Metheny's Web Site:

(August 2, 2007)

The newly re-mastered version of Secret Story is being released as part of the "Remasters from the Vault" series. Great news fans! This release will contain and bonus disc containing 5 new tunes from the original session that were never released. Also includes newly added artwork.

Secret Story:Deluxe Edition!

Hi Folk,

The new package is beautiful, the original disc of 1992 is still there and it's very good anf fresh. If you had the original one, keep it and don't buy this deluxe edition. If you had not, ok, take it for the original disc.

Even if I'm a fan of Metheny, I don't thing that deluxe edition is worth it. The 5 bonus songs (16 minutes only) are very left-over materials for curiosity only! I understood why they don't keep that five songs in the original disc in 1992.

I agree with Nefertiti that Travels is a really great one by the PMG - truly marvellous stuff with attitude, as well as some of that limpidly melodic, pastoral and peaceful stuff, like Farmer's Trust.
Still Life (Talking) is far and away the best of these five - Minuano Six Eight and Third Wind have some of the greatest guitar solos EVER, and the writing is amazing.
Each of the others has good points to recommend, although Quartet is an odd one, in that they tried the old spontaneous composition on it, and the music ends up, for the most part, sounding thorougly composed!
Letter From Home has some great writing and playing, and Road to You is almost a greatest hits. I particularly love the way it fades in with the audience singing the melody to Minuano Six Eight - dunno why they didn't have a version of that on as well, 'cos it's a marvellous tune, and I've yet to hear a live version. I bet Pat really stretches out on it! Third Wind is pretty heavy and I wish I'd seen them play it (when I saw the PMG a few years back they just played The Way Up in its entirety and a few other things. Great gig though!)

Pat in Brasil August 1980

Too many to name, but for starters, the group with Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb live in Rio (Brasil), part of a jazz festival, first big one in that country, so the stadium, 'little' Maracana, was packed. Journalists and TV folks everywhere (it got a LOT of coverage, I was there as a writer also). Weather Report was there as well (with Jaco). The leading samba school concluded the festival with Airto, Nana Vasconcelos, and Guillerme Franco joining them.

Wow David! Sounds well cool. I bet Weather Report was utterly stomping as well. Can't seem to access the photos though.

Think nothing of it! There's a little icon of a tiny landscape next to the link icon when you post a reply, and that's where the photo URL goes I believe.
